OFFSEASON 2023-24
Quote from Randy Manese on February 1, 2024, 6:51 pmOrioles arguably have the deepest and most major league ready prospects of any team in the MLB. Not sure we would have been open to match that package for a pitcher in his walk year. We'll never know what names were tossed around by which teams but I believe most impartial reviews of this trade will say that Milwaukee did very well to get Ortiz and Hall for Burnes.

You're right. I mistakenly thought Burnes had one more year control.

Don’t forget that Burnes is due $15.6MM MM in 2024 which would basically deplete the available money to fill out the roster … certainly no room for error with any other move.
A good move for BALT and a blazing entry for the new announced owners. Not sure where MILW stands in this … other than saving money witch is always their goal.
Burnes would be great but those three voids in the line-up might just offset Burnes benefit (and more)

Quote from MrPadre19 on February 2, 2024, 5:44 amPersonally I am not a fan of Hall....always thought he was over rated as a prospect.
Young controllable Lefty so there's that.....always worth a shot.
IMO Ortiz is a major league average middle infielder at best...little power/little speed so won't stand out.
I'm sure Bal is ecstatic they got Burnes without giving up even better prospects....if I'm an O's fan I'm over the moon with this move.
But there's always the draft pick!

The return for Burnes … and elite SP but only one year control in a market overpaying for FA SP when Burnes only has a $15MM salary might make us start thinking about the reduction in trade value for players with only one year control and maybe the value placed on prospects (even if not elite prospects).
Hall and Ortiz are “nice” prospects but both are already 25 and more fringe ML options than potential stars. Hall was drafted back in 2017 … long time in the system without making an impact. No Top 100 guys for a Cy Young candidate.
This deal oddly may put a damper on thoughts of moving Kim with one year control and expect to get anything significant in return that would help in 2024.

On MILW’s side they clear more money taking their payroll well under 2023 (even after signing Hoskins) to under $110MM. Somewhat a conundrum with moving money out with Burnes and money in with Hoskins. Some speculation that they might even lower the payroll more by moving Adames (big contract) with the arrival of Ortiz.
Since we like to speculate …. If they move Adames now the will be more than $30MM under 2023 … enough to go big on Snell? Montgomery? Chapman for 3B? … still compete for the NL Central in 2024 and beyond after dumping the two short control / expensive pieces.

Quote from BoosterSD on February 2, 2024, 9:01 amSaw on MLBTR that STL has signed RP Keynan Middleton. I wonder if that takes their OFers off the trade list, or if SD could still work something out for one of their OFers?

I would say yes … STL still needs to improve their pen and the “excess” OF don’t do much for their 2024 season. However, they may be harder to deal with with less pressure and holdout for a better return.

Right now their #4 Starter is Colin Rea
Peralta/Miley/Ashby(coming off throwing shoulder surgery)/Rea/?
Not sure they have the arms to compete in '24

Sort of why making a push for Snell or Montgomery fits ... otherwise why spend the money on Hoskins?
MILW clearly does not like lame duck players ... so the moves of Burnes and maybe Adames fits their profile ... and that should knock them out of contention but then why Hoskins? Move Adames and their payroll drops to about $90MM (down from somewhere in the $120-130MM level in 2023).
Add Mongomery ... with Hall .. and a lower cost SP from the Adames deal they might be OK.
