So $19 mil per year to get 3 outs
Largest RP contract in history based on present value (Diaz had some of his money deferred knocking the present value down).
Just me but 5 years for a RP just does not make sense given the ups and downs of closers .. and at a $19MM AAV, whew. Still, gland he is in the AL. Padres get a Comp Pick since he had a QO.

Quote from fenn68 on January 19, 2024, 1:01 pmWonder if this big signing creates some ripple effect with Snell or Montgomery … thinking Texas still wants a SP and neck and neck with Houston for the AL West race … Houston gets better with Hader … does Texas counter with a SP?

Quote from MrPadre19 on January 19, 2024, 1:23 pmSurely no Padre fan with reasonable understanding of how things work is upset we didn't keep Hader at this cost.
Can argue Wacha/Lugo....and maybe even Snell, but not Hader.
Sayonara!

Hell, forget the cost. I'm still upset with the way he ended his stay with us. You could argue his absolute refusal to work more than 3 outs in any given outing cost us a few games down the stretch, which was the difference between the playoffs and not. I get he was a future free agent, but he was a current Padre. Friggin lame and good riddance.

My thought exactly. I hope Houston knows they got a 1 inning pitcher.

At the end, I can't help but think that they just needed 2 more Ws to get a wild card spot 🙁

And only a few days at a time! God forbid they ask him to work more than 3 days in a row.

Quote from fenn68 on January 20, 2024, 5:04 amStill trying to reset my thinking on the cost of FA (especially pitchers) in this market.
The LAA signing of Robert Stephenson for 3 years / $33MM ($11MM AAV) may have been more head scratching than the Hader deal.
Stephenson (30) over the past two seasons had a 4.32 ERA (only 1 save) … that is not all that compelling yet he was considered the next best FA RP after Hader … which says something about the FA market.
I am beginning to rethink my view of the Padres’ Robert Suarez (32). Injured most of last season and had an unfortunate end to 2022 playoffs. He is signed for four more years at $36MM ($9MM AAV). However, in 2022 (48 innings) he had a sparkling 2.27 ERA in a set-up role (only 1 save). In today’s market … even apparently for a set-up man … that appears to be a bargain. If, without Hader, Suarez steps into the closer role as the Padres envisioned when they signed him … he becomes a huge bargain.
The new level for the cost of “average” pitching leads me to avoid adding pitching on the FA market … and given no idea who among the internal prospects will become effective ML pitchers … hoard all the internal arms until the pitching needs are filled with internal options (then maybe deal the “excess”).
Looking as though … with payroll constraints … and the clear need for three hitters … any “overspending” should be on OF to get the biggest bang for the buck. To that end …not a lot lot of compelling OF as FA … so an “overpay” may become a necessity to get the better of an unimpressive group … considering a current OF of Tatis and Azocar is a bit short of ML standards.

Quote from MrPadre19 on January 20, 2024, 5:34 amGuessing Shildt will use Suarez and Matsui to Close based on matchups and availability.
On Hader, now that he's locked up his $100 mil deal maybe he will actually be willing to go 4 outs or 3 days in a row?
Nah!
