OFFSEASON 2023-24

PreviousPage 138 of 184Next

Now that the Padres eligible players have signed contracts, per Roster Resource, the Padres sit $25MM under the luxury tax first threshold … some money to work with.

However, the FA market is now pretty thin on reliable quality … yet even some of the mediocre players are still projected to command a healthy contract … at least until they become desperate if not getting much interest from teams. Case for lower end gambles closer to ST.

Based on 2023 WAR the top FA remaining:

SP: Montgomery; Snell; then falls down to Clevinger

Hiters: Bellinger; Chapman; Belt (most expect him to really fade in 2024)

Probably see a heightened focus on trades for the next month … then following supply and demand economics … given almost all teams are still pursuing pitching the trade value of any kind of quality ML pitching (even prospect pitching) has to be higher than in the past.

Given the lack of at least 3 position players on the 26 man roster … and no guarantee that the FA / trade market will fill those slots with any quality (maybe just filler bodies) … might the Padres get forced to consider one of their prospects for opening day (or at least plan on them as early season call-ups)?

To be clear don’t think any are ready or should be accelerated development at the ML level.

What we have to consider based on 2023:

Merrill: 277/322/444 … in AA (187 AB) 273/338/444

Pauley: 308/393/538 … in AA (81 AB) 321/375/556

Marsee: 274/413/428 … in AA (56 AB) 286/412/446

Marsee is getting the most of the talk probably because he could be a CF and had a great AFL (not really that good an indicator). Merrill as a TOP 10 ML prospect gets some consideration. The player who maybe should be more consideration is Pauley … although a bit positionally challenged his bat MAY be the most advanced and MIGHT fit as a needed LHH fit DH/LF (not going to get 2B/3B) and an outside chance (if Kim traded) converted to 1B.

Guessing none make the opening day roster but at least one (maybe all three) are on the 26 man roster in September.

Obviously depending on what AJ does in free agency and the trade market all of these guys could be options depending on their Spring Training.

But...I'd sure like to see these "hitters" in El Paso....but just like pitchers it's so inflated there it won't be the tell all....just might be fun to see if they can put up video game numbers.

These Starters are even better trade candidates now.

Their cost is a known quantity....my guess is with the cost of free agent Starters Cease does get moved.

The White Sox are not winning anything in '24 and Cease for $8 mil is worth a lot in trade to "someone".

I saw one SD blurb guy suggest that SD trade Lesko, Thorpe, Martorella, and Hawkins for Cease. Sounds like a lot to me.

IF SD was to even think about pulling a trigger on something like that, try and get Andrew Vaughn as well for 1B.

Sounds like a lot to me too.

Plus I would think AJ wants to see how Martorella develops (considering our need at 1B after Kim leaves) this year before trading him.Unless of course he gets us a starting 1B controlled for 3-4 years this offseason, or as you say....Vaughn.

One line of attack by Preller is a deal of Kim with STL … a team that has spent to rebuild the pitching staff and having a strong offense (except SS) with a clear eye on the playoffs / NL Central. Kim is a perfect fit at on $8MM and being only one year is good since their top prospect … Winn … is near (but not quite) ML ready … should be for 2025.

In the return, the could angle for Burleson a LHH 1B/LF (not great defense) but who was in the ML last season and is projected as a plus hitter / power who should be slightly above average in wRC+ … and a needed LHH. Probably need more from STL but as part of the deal could fit. (Would love AA prospect CF Scott … plus plus defense / speed and appears to be able to hit … should be a Top 100 in the next release … but not likely STL moves him …unless a bigger player trade).

Such a move would get Cronenworth back to 2B (should improve his value) and clear $7MM AAV boosting the deployable money to around $32MM of other FA/trade options. Probably not going to re-sign Kim (will get a Dansby Swanson deal as a SS … and that is big).

From things I have read, STL is pretty set with its SS situation. Have heard that they want additional RP help.

So how about Burleson for Avila? They both carry the same value on BTV (independent place to start).

Lets say we have $22M at this time to stay under the CBT and save some money for trade time I suggest the following moves. (All trades are suggested fair by BTV, an independent source for player value)

As Fenn has posted, with Marsee a question mark for CF defensively, and the MiL CFers are at least a couple of years away, lets just bite the bullet and move Tatis to CF.

Move Tatis to CF.

STL gets Avila and SD gets Burleson for 1B. Money is still at $22M.

MIA gets Kim and Zavala, SD gets Cabrera SP and Jesus Sanchez LHH RFer. SD nets $4M, $26M to spend.

SD signs Profar for LF, $4.5M, $21.5M to spend.

SD signs Andrus for 3B and back up INF $4.5M. $17M to spend.

Profar - LF, Tatis - CF, Sanchez - RF. Andrus/Machado - 3B/DH, Bogaerts - SS, Crone - 2B, Burleson - 1B, Campusano/Higashioka - C. Need 3 players for the bench.

SP - Musgrove, Darvish, King, Cabrera, Brito, and Vasquez. RP - Suarez, Woo, Matsui, De Los Santos, Cosgrove, and Patino.

Leaving us $17M to add another SP and/or some bench help.

I would do that.

Doubt MIA would buy into that deal … might want Kim but for one year control and increasing  their payroll not likely to give up 5 years of Cabrera and 4 years of Sanchez … both expected to be keys to their future.

Not even convinced they do either one even up for Kim.

One thing to speculate about MIA … word is that they (after moving on from Ng) have added TB FO types and are going to behave more like the Rays. So, manage to a low payroll and focus on moving players out as they get expensive in their last couple of year control. Not add costly short term pieces. So, Kim (although maybe needed) may not fit their model as an add while Cabrera and Sanchez would be less likely to be moved (unless for offsetting low cost long term control assets). Plus even with their current roster … in good position for a playoff run, so may not want key ML deletes to get the adds.

That was a trade that I read about last night, and it was based on a person that covers MIA.

Anyway, then we could pivot, keep Kim, trade for Kepler and then would not need Andrus. Still adds a LHH for RF, and gives SD one more year to figure out the futures of Marsee and Pauley and where they can fill spots.

After keeping Kim, signing Profar, and trading for Kepler would still have about $7.5M for bench or pitching add.
