Just a thought and it would require AJ to put his ego aside…we need a 1b lefty…we are already paying his salary for this year so why not bring back Hosmer to ST and see if he has anything left and while we’re at it we need an OF with a good arm and can get you 20-30 HR a year…Hunter Renfro who wouldn’t cost a lot of money…if they both actually played that frees up $$ for pitching and serve as a bridge to the young guys for 2025…like I said…just a thought

I had that thought about Hosmer about 1.5 weeks ago, thought I would get laughed off this page 😉, but yeah we are already paying him.....so why not.

Renfroe signed late last week/early this week with KC for $13M for 2 years, with an opt out after this season.

How much “extra” would they have to pay Hosmer to get him to come back? He is getting his full contract for the next two season for not playing and given his age and the fact no one wanted to sign him even for league minimum (not sure was even interested) …

As for Renfroe … isn’t KC his 5th team in the 4 years since he left SD after 2019 … no matter how he performs no one seems to want to keep him … that makes me cautious.

Does anyone see a world where we trade both Kim and Crone, go with Merrill at SS or 2B, and then sign a Santana like player for 1B?

It's become pretty obvious that Preller is trying to get rid of Crone. Unfortunately, it seems that he would either have to pay down too much of the contract or include too many good prospects to make it feasible. If Preller can find an acceptable deal for Crone, I think he is gone. If he cannot trade Crone, he may trade Kim. I don't see both being traded. That would just open up another hole. Then again, he included Grisham in the Soto trade, so it is always possible.

Pretty sure I read somewhere after Renfroe's tour in Milwaukee that no one is sorry to see him leave when he moves onto his next clubhouse.

Looks as if MIL is trading a SP along with an OFer to NYM.

Does that mean MIL is tearing down, or that now are less willing to trade a remaining SP, ala Burnes?

One time highly thought of RHP Luis Patino just DFA'd by White Sox.  Lot of scouts were saying that he could be as good as Gore and he was the key acquisition for Tampa Bay in the Snell trade.  Again, so hard to judge whether these young guys are ever going to reach their potential; in fact, it doesn't seem that even Gore will reach the TOR spot many thought he was a slam dunk for.  Just a cautionary statement about pushing Snelling, Lesko, et al, too soon and why sometimes it is better to acquire an established arm vice counting on a prospect to fulfill his potential.

We had Tatis, Gore, Urias, Mejia, Paddack, Patino, Morejon, Baez, Allen, and Weathers all on the top 100 list back in 2019. I don't think any of us would have believed where they're all at in 2023.

Sports Illustrated confirms it: Yuki Matsui signs with the Padres for $21 million over 4 years. Potentially great deal!

SI seems to think that Matsui will take over as closer to allow Suarez to remain a setup reliever. We will see. I am pleased.

While 10M/yr seemed high, 5.25M/yr seems low.  Haven't seen it reported on MLB.com yet but if that is the deal, then it is a very good one.  Still don't think he's not without warts, but does bring an experienced arm in higher leverage situations - and is a lefty.  Certainly, a better option than Kerr and Morejon (or Tim Hill, Jose Castillo or Drew Pomeranz (because couldn't keep him on the field)).

Crismatt to dodgers.

I know we always want former Padres to return but I think it’s quite possible with Patiño….unless there are still concerns with his shoulder.

What the?

Houser and Taylor to the Mets for the Mets 25th ranked prospect who just had TJ?

Drafted by the Angels in the 22nd round?

I know Houser is a rental…but that’s like SD giving up Stephen Kolek for a solid #3 SP and 3 years of a power hitting LH 4th outfielder…..Taylor wasn’t good last year but he’s been decent in the past and I’ve always thought he would be a starter at some point.

I guess I’m shocked cause we could really use Houser and Taylor and it looks like it would have cost very little in prospect capital.Guess AJ doesn’t want any 1 year rentals at this point.
