Reports are that the PADRES are trying harder than ever to trade Hedges. Appears internally they are over him as an option.

Mejia is the “second” catcher if they get someone who garners a lot of playing time or the “first” catcher and g0 with Torrens as the “second” catcher. I see the redeployment of Barajas is essentially the “Catching Coach” as a pretty clear indication that Mejia will be here in 2020 ... too much upside with long control at minimum cost.

Not sure how the Padres are valuing Hedges in trade negotiations .. and how that aligns with “trying harder than ever” to trade him .... but clearly not finding a trade partner. Does suggest even with a number of teams needing catching and little on the market ... an all defense no offense option is NOT in demand.

Houston ... LAA ... Texas ... someone should pick him up even just as a back-up on a contender. His contract cost is not that bad for a back-up. However, his appeal as a starter apparently is zip.

Not that I would stay away from Contreras but just would not overpay ... and what that is is clearly debatable.

I am a bit tempered in my valuation of Contreras ... consider the past 3 season v. Hedges for the 19 catchers with > 1000 PA:

Contreras ... 105 game (average) ... 5.8 WAR (cumulative) ... 115 wRC+ (3rd) .... -0.7 dWAR (avg season) (16th)

Hedges ....... 104 game (average) ... 5.5 WAR (cumulative) ...   68 wRC+ (19th) .. +22.2 dWAR (avg season) (2nd).

So a clean shift from defense to offense ... and I am really OK with that.

But consider the average of only 1o5 games ... that leaves 57 games for the second catcher. That mix is pretty normal these days for catchers and given the Padres need for some RHH option for Hosmer ... a decent situation of the second catcher can hit. Enter Mejia in 2019 as a young prospect just getting ML time:

Season ......... 96 wRC+ ... -0.1 dWAR

2nd Half ..... 127 wRC+ ...  -0.1 dWAR

Mejia IS Contreras going forward ... hitter with below average defense. Sort of why a Mejia/Contreras combo would be elite .... if defense is not your bag.

Wow... Strasburg just cashed in and killed expectations.  7 / 245.  Glad we aren't in that mix.

I was still holding out a little hope that we could pick up Ryu. Thank you Steven Strasburg for destroying the market and putting even Ryu well out of our reach! I think Ryu is now going to get an $80-$100 million 4-year contract. At least this should help bankrupt the Yankees for the next 8 years after they sign Cole. I expect him to get 8-years $300 million now.

I'm thinking the 2 years younger Cole now gets 8/300

Guessing 9 years @ $37.5M for a total of $337.5M, NYY.

Oh well...so much for any starter.....at least we got rid of Urias and Renfroe....those two plus Andy Green being gone should add 20 wins next season.

I like Julio Teheran or Pineda on a short term deal.. Around 3/30

Pineda resigned with the Twins.

2/20

With the deals Lyles and Gibson signed Davies was a steal!
