Myers

PreviousPage 2 of 2

I gotta agree with Mr. P. I don’t see the Padres resetting their entire OF this season. We got 2 new OF, 1 of whom can play CF. I would bet almost anything that Preller is going to keep Myers now. Somebody has to play RF. We gave up Edwards, Urias and Lauer. We could trade maybe Campusano plus somebody to get rid of Myers, but then what? He would need to be replaced as a starter. So we could spend all of his money on a replacement? The guys available are nowhere near enough of an improvement to be worth both the prospects it would take to get rid of Myers AND the money it would take to sign them.

I don't know... Myers has not been a great fit in RF in the past.  Pham has barely played there in his career.  Doesn't make sense to move Pham to CF, Margot to RF just so Myers can play LF where he's better suited...

As in other posts, unless owners willing to go to 150 MM payroll, would have to trade Myers just to have $ to fit Marte.  Assuming Margot goes out in trade (not certain, but seems highly logical/likely), still opens either CF or RF.  It's really that you're trading prospects again for another 2 year control OF that's the issue.  Think the exact offensive/readiness profiles of Pham/Cronenworth were a perfect fit for Renfroe/Edwards out, but doubt there's going to be another trade for Marte or anyone else that is that perfect of a fit for us.  More likely trading say good SP prospect/s to get Marte for just 2 years...

You & Mr. P's argument that Pads are happy with gaining essentially 1.5+ new OF out of 3 might carry weight; especially b/c Naylor or Cordero can take some AB vs RHP this year too.

Trying to find a defensive home for Myers that could at least focus on is fitting him to his best defensive position and hopefully the helps him settle and improve his offense. Looking at Myers of the past 4 years:

LF ... 769 innings .... +4 DRS .... +5.0 UZR/150

RF ... 143 innings .... + 3 DRS ... -3.2 UZR/150

CF ... 426 innings .... -10 DRS ... -11.5 UZR/150

3B ... 327 innings .... + 1 DRS ... -24.7 UZR/150

1B ... 2686 innings ..  +8 DRS .... -0.8 UZR/150

Other than the misuse of Myers by bouncing a top young prospect over 5 positions ... two of which were totally out of his skill set (CF and 3B) .... gut reaction is that sitting him in LF would make the best use of him but without a real RF option RF at least has a chance to work (if you like defense runs saved metric).

Keeping Myers out of CF is a must ... which loops back to another post where they should consider Pham in CF instead of Myers. Against LHP: Naylor - Pham - Myers might actually get them the best offense and even a better defense than Pham - Myers - Naylor. Of course, adding a better option is preferred.
