MLB Draft July 9-11
Quote from Jeremy Hill on July 20, 2023, 5:20 pmThe high school undrafted kids are kind of interesting. You don't see too many of them signing. Looks like Langston Burkett had a dominant year on the mound too. 6-1 with a 0.45 ERA in 46 innings if the site I'm looking at is correct. The other kid Donte Grant had an OBP over .500 in his high school career too. He doesn't seem to have any power though.

Getting Devries will offset this some as well

DeVries is supposedly a top-of-the-draft type of talent. That will certainly help. The Padres may not get a star in the 2024 draft, but it seems that there should be several good-but-not-great college pitchers available at pick #24. I would be fine with that.

Quote from fenn68 on December 11, 2023, 6:34 amIn a way, signing DeVries as the uber prospect for 2024 along with what we think is a pretty decent corp of prospects already near term ... Preller could stick with his recent bias and at #24 go with the upside pick .... probably a HS pitcher.
The Padres are having a pretty good success rate going HS after the 1st round so we can hope that ability to see the upside of a player at #24 holds. Keep going for high upside over "safer" low ceiling college players who may be up sooner. Would not be upset if they landed another Snelling or Campusano. LAA got Mike Trout somewhere in the low 20s ... out of HS.

This would be ideal. The problem is that there seems to be a lack of high-end highschool talent available for this draft, at least so far. Hopefully that changes by the end of the season.

A lot changes in the HS ranks before the draft and scouting / projection is a very team specific exercise where a team may just be better than “national” projections … certainly at this point. Add that if things hold to form most of the picks ahead of #24 will be College types (less risk vs evaluation) and only the top of the HS crop.
Padres seem to be good at this and as I said could take a bigger risk on the upside if DeVries is already in the fold.
I guess I would not rule out a big upside gamble on a player who would sign well under slot so they can go over slot on the subsequent picks. If at #24 they really don’t see players they like for the slot price … find someone they do like who will sign under slot and then in the next round(s) go over slot on players that that they do still like by have dropped due to sign-ability. Padres do like to gamble on pitchers who may have lost their platform season due to injury. Have to know who is on the board … and the demands … to figure out the plan.
Really boils down to the Padres’ scouting and evaluation being different than 0tthers.

Quote from MrPadre19 on December 11, 2023, 10:48 amOne thing about Preller you have to give credit...he isn't panicked about his job and going for the College types who can help in the short term.
Taking Lesko a couple years ago was a pick of a guy with no concerns about his immediate future.
Does that change now with Seidler now not in the forefront of Ownership?
We'll see but I doubt it...

I would like to see the Padres get a player who has big power and can actually hit in this year's draft. They probably won't be able to get anyone at SS, 3B or OF like that at pick 24, but maybe a 1B? It seems there should be a few high upside HS arms along with a selection of lower upside college arms that are closer to the majors at that pick as well. We will see.
