Minor League Discussion

Padres got good pitching from their minor league starters with mixed results.  Matos (San Ant) had a no hitter into the 5th; Bergert had one pitch get away for a HR and got no run support at Ft. Wayne; and Rascon had to pitch around a leaky defense at Lake Elsinore.  Overall, however, both showed unexpected progress and SA and LE got wins.

Merrill out for second straight game with no explanation that I know of - really need him in that offense.  With the exception of Hassell, Mears and Wood have cooled off for the first couple of games at home - maybe feeling the pressure of a home crowd albeit small in numbers?

Also, as good as Hassell is and going to be, Reynolds is already there.  You have to make that deal if we don't give up another top 10 prospect.  Padres announcers say that Profar is a completely different hitter from last year.  Ditto for Esteury Ruiz - he's looking very good and when Mazara and Thompson go up or elsewhere, he could be slotted into El Paso.

If you look at Weathers' line, doesn't look very good but actually there was much improvement from his previous outings.  He had clean innings in the 2nd, 3rd and 6th after an error filled first that was punctuated by a 2 run HR given up.  However, most of the time he was ahead of the hitters and his breaking stuff was much better located, changing the plane from that slingshot slurvy pitch he usually throws at belt high level that is normally smoked.   Weathers FB was mostly 90-92, but he got to 94 once or twice.  He still caught too much of the plate when he missed and that resulted in the 3 HRs, 2 of which were solo shots but I would say I am encouraged but still need to see more.  El Paso dodged a 9th inning threat, just like San Antonio to win the game.  Strong performance by RHP Tayler Scott.  Mazara hit 1 HR and was robbed of another by a leaping catch at the wall.

In San Antonio, Waldron pitched his best game of the year and Kopps almost blew the game after loading the bases with one out in the 9th.   At Ft. Wayne, Snell looked very good, although he does seem to want to nit-pick the strike zone when he doesn't have to.  His breaking stuff was dominant and his FB was consistently at 96-97.  Wolf must have been inspired by Snell because he also pitched his best game of the year, even getting his FB up to 90.  Finally, it looked like a special night for Jairo Iriarte after 3 innings, when he had 31 of 39 pitches in for strikes even though he gave up a HR.  However, the roof fell in and he only got one more out and lost plate command giving up 4 more runs before he was pulled - that's how quickly young pitchers can lose it.  Don't give up on him, however, he has a really good 3 pitch mix at age 20.   LE had a chance to pull it out but their last RP gave up the winning run.  It would have been nice to get a system sweep!

Remember A.J. Brown teasing us in the off-season by smashing balls in the batting cage?  Well, with a new 100 Million dollar contract from the Eagles, looks like he's not going to be in our minor league system any time soon.

Jose Castillo with another good outing at Lake Elsinore.  Struck out 2, 1 looking/1 swing and miss.  Overall I had 7 of his 12 pitches as either called strikes(2) or swings/misses (5).  He did have a 4 pitch walk to one batter but it was with two outs and it looked like he was trying to work on some of his other breaking stuff.  He subsequently struck out the next hitter.  I'd like to see him come back and pitch on Sunday and see how effective he is.  Castillo didn't seem like he was laboring and had a nice easy delivery.

Hawkins seems to have regressed a little.  He did get 7 K's, but had an inordinate amount of foul balls (23), foul tips for strikes (3) out of his 73 pitches.  Only 8 of his pitches were called strikes.  Location was generally okay but his velocity seemed down from other games he's pitched.

Robert Hassel III should be in AA.

He’s making a mockery of the league he’s in.

Might see moves in June after at last 150 AB … just so that Hassell (and any player being considered for promotion) gets through a good mix of good and bad opponents, a good mix of home and road … just to avoid a “hot steak”. Never know what the coaches see that might not reflect the results.

If E.Ruiz stays hot … a promotion to AAA could open a slot for Hassell to AA. Fortifies the future CF progression. At LE, might not jump Woods to FW but might consider Ferguson (a college type) that has been hitting as an INF and CF skills.

Still early BUT we could be suddenly in great shape for the future CF options … Tatis returning may move Abrams to CF … E.Ruiz is blazing hot in AA … Hassell is living up to hype in A+ … Wood is exceeding hype in A (Ferguson is a dark horse) … and the ACL/DSL have some high profile types.

The 2025 OF in SD could be special offensively and defensively.

Michel Baez cruised thru 2 innings at LE, so much so that it seemed he could have easily pitched another inning.  Had him with 4 called strikes, a swing/miss strike that resulted in his only K and 8 foul ball strikes.  Nothing was hit hard or barreled off of him.  When he did miss, it was mostly down in the zone, a couple bouncing right in front of the plate.  Nice to see him back and he could fill a number of roles for the Padres this year once he gets built up.

Padres' minor league teams have now listed all the players on either the 7 day or 60 IL.  That takes care of most of those who were "missing" but I note some old friends no longer in the upper minors - Alarcon, Little and Schlichtholz - so I guess they were released or retired.  Almanzar, supposedly one of the best bats in the 2016 international class, never could put it together and retired on 3/31/22.  A couple of other guys who I thought might be on the Lake Elsinore team are still not accounted for but they may be assigned to the Arizona Complex League, which I believe will open sometime in June.

Padres signed Yusmeiro Petit veteran 35 year old RP to a minor league contract. He had 4 very good years in the OAK pen as a set-up man playing for Melvin.

Some insurance as RP arms for the Padres may have some future issues beyond the injuries to Adams, Johnson, and Pomeranz.

Not sure if he still holds the record or not, but he set the record most consecutive outs recorded in 2014. I think it was something like 46 straight over many games.
