Monday, September 22 - 6:40pm, TV: San Diego Cox 83
RHP Freddy Peralta(17-6, 2.65 ERA, 195 K, .190 BAA) vs RHP Nick Pivetta(13-5, 2.81 ERA, 185 K, .195 BAA)Tuesday, September 23 - 6:40pm, TV: San Diego Cox 83
LHP Bruce Zimmerman(---, -.-- ERA, --- K, .--- BAA) vs RHP Randy Vasquez(5-7, 3.94 ERA, 74 K, .253 BAA)Wednesday, September 24 - 1:10pm, TV: San Diego Cox 83
RHP Quinn Priester(13-2, 3.25 ERA, 128 K, .238 BAA) vs RHP Dylan Cease(8-12, 4.64 ERA, 207 K, .237 BAA)The Padres head west to play their final homestand and final 6 games of the season against the Brewers and then the Dbacks. The Brewers, who the Padres have beat in 2 of 3 in Milwaukee, already clinched their division and a first round bye.
The Padres can clinch a playoff berth with a win on Monday night. It would be nice to clinch in front of our home crowd for a change.
Padres are 3 games back of the Dodgers. Actually 4 with the tie breaker.
The Padres play the final 6 games at home(47-28), where they have played much better on the road, first against the Brewers, who have clinched their division and first round bye, and then the Dbacks.
The Dodgers play their final 6 games on the road(36-39), where they don't play as well, in Arizona and in Seattle. Dbacks will be battling for a wild card spot and the Mariners battling for the AL West title.
I know there is a slim chance of the Padres winning the NL West. This is baseball and anything can happen. But, I can hope.

Quote from ultratvfan on September 22, 2025, 5:40 pmTaking Tatis, Laureano, and Fermin out in one game against the best team in MLB is a terrible lineup. What is Schildt thinking? Does he want to lose?
I hope this lineup gets it done tonight with Pivetta on the mound.

He said it was a scheduled day off for Laureano and Tatis has some kind of bug. He didn't want to take Laureano's day off away from him when he found out about Tatis since Laureano has played a ton since we picked him up. It can probably also be interpreted as them prioritizing being ready for the wildcard series over a longshot chance at moving up.

Quote from fenn68 on September 22, 2025, 6:52 pmYep, with only 1 game to clinch a playoff slot (either a Padre win or a CINN/NYM loss) have to feel good and very long shot to catch CUBS or LAD.
Expect to see a lot more "rest days" for regulars this week while giving some bench players some AB to keep sharp. Now is the time to set-up the playoffs over winning any one game.
Might also see some "unusual" handling of the pitchers for the same reason ... trying to set the best up for the three game set.

Quote from fenn68 on September 22, 2025, 7:17 pmSeason ends on Sunday ... the three game playoff starts on Tuesday and you want everyone both sharp and rested ... tough balancing act.
For example if you want Pivetta to start game 1 ... and he is on schedule to pitch again Sunday ... might see him earlier ( FRI or SAT) for a short start even if lights out ... keeps him in game sharpness and still fresh for a Tuesday start. Don't probably want them to go eight days without game competition.
Might also be rotation management to set-up Pivetta in game #1 then if they win go with Cease / Darvish / Vasquez in game #2 trying to keep King for game #1 of the next set (or game #3 if they lose). The next series starts on Saturday ... Pivetta would likely fit on Sunday and, if possible, would prefer King to start that five game set and he could make game #5 given the off day.
A lot of strategy trying to win the series after series ... not just one game.

Quote from ultratvfan on September 22, 2025, 10:14 pmThe Padres win the battle to clinch a playoff berth and 1/2 game closer to the Dodgers and 1/2 game closer to the Cubs for top wild card spot, which will give them home field advantage in the wild card playoffs.
Vasquez on the mound in game 2.
GO PADRES!
