Luis Campusano, who got five days off after the Padres announced he’d join the AFL this year, returned to the lineup as the designated hitter. The receiver, who turns 21 later this month, had a single to extend his hitting streak to five and on-base streak to 13 games.

Joel (Minneapolis, MN):
Looking ahead to next year, who would be your best bet to make a hard run into the top 50 from outside the current top 100? And who from the 50-100 spots do you see as a fast riser next year? Thanks for the amazing work you do!
Kyle Glaser: Jordyn Adams and Geraldo Perdomo are the guys outside the Top 100 I think have a chance to make a big jump. In the 50-100 range, Luis Campusano and Brailyn Marquez have a chance to shoot up. And thanks. Glad you enjoy it.

Luis Campusano was pulled from the Arizona Fall League after just 13 at-bats due to a hip impingement. While there is no major health concern, the organization felt that keeping the talented backstop in Arizona for 30 days may have been too long and the organization brought him to instructs to give him the chance to finish the season strong.

Luis Campusano, the team's top catching prospect, threw out two would-be Rangers basestealers.

Louis (San Diego):
Just how good is Campusano's bat? Is a .300 average with 20/25 HRs in play?
Kyle Glaser: That would make him Buster Posey. Think more .270 on the average, the 20-25 bombs are certainly possible. That's still excellent, excellent offensive production for a catcher.

Quote from fenn68 on September 5, 2020, 9:06 amGoing to be a very interesting audition for the rest of 2020 (or until Pham returns). Depending how good (ML ready) he appears ... that could have a big impact on how Preller handles the winter moves.
Preller is aggressive with high ceiling rookies (see Tatis, Paddack) so if Campusano shows any readiness combined with his potential to be a quality ML player ... could see him in the plan to begin 2021 on the active roster. Add that Nola can be deployed (if needed) at other spots .... could open the door for carrying those 3 catchers including Mejia for his hitting potential.
IF they keep Campusano, Nola, Mejia that could cover C/DH plus. Then, maybe Moreland's option is not exercised and that $3MM is deployed to support the re-signing Profar (as the "10th man" for the OF/INF as Pham returns to LF).
I am eager to see Campusano behind the plate at some point but for the rest of this season (and against the better teams) probably should stick with Nola / Castro to get them in sync with the pitching staff for the playoffs.

Quote from Brian Connelly on September 5, 2020, 1:08 pmYes, 3 catchers next season with all 3 DH capable (if hitting well), Nola 2B & "other" capable, and Mejia MAYBE corner OF capable really opens up some possibilities...
.... but not to keep Profar at Moreland's expense. I just checked, and Moreland's 2017 &18 splits vs RHP were in line with his long career averages of: .253 / .321. / .448 But in 2019 they improved to: .262 / .338 / .549 = slightly better BA/OBP but > power. That trend has continued this year in the tiny sample of 78 PA vs RHP: .313 / .410 / .731 !!!
He is here this year & next to be the DH vs RHP. Remember Profar even though SH hits LHP much better. Theoretically can help complement Moreland at DH, but not replace him.

The issue with keeping Moreland and three catchers .. that consumes 3 of the 5 bench options leaving only two to cover the rest of the field / line-up ... CF/SS/PR et. al.
Plus since DH is Moreland's role ... have to consider Tingler's apparent preference to use the DH over the course of a season as a spot to rotate starters into to give them a break from the field while keeping their bats in the line-up ... Moreland (LHH) can really only go 1B to relieve Hosmer (LHH) who would then show up as the DH ...
I suspect that the Padres will want to keep the eight position player starters getting as much ABs as possible (while rotating them through DH) ... so a have basically two DH options with Moreland and the 3rd catcher should result in very few AB for one (or both).
Could move on from both Moreland and Profar .... with Pham returning ... save a lot of money to redeploy. Have Mejia / Campusano in the DH role ... and look to add a quality 4th OF (who can play CF) and/or a quality middle INF (who can play SS). Might also allow them to pursue a RH closer (Rosenthal? Yates?) ... RHRP may be a question in 2021. Just don't see strengthening DH as critical in 2021.
