Los Angeles Dodgers at San Diego Padres: July 30-31
Quote from 3fingersplit on July 31, 2024, 6:34 amI had zero problem with the bunt...there are so many ways to score from 3rd base with one out and it's baseball...Balk, Wild Pitch, Passed Ball, Sac Fly, two different squeeze plays, slow roller, high chopper, hit batter, Base hit, BB, straight steal and I might have missed some...can't do any of those things except a hit and score from 2nd base.

Quote from 3fingersplit on July 31, 2024, 6:42 amQuote from Jeremy Hill on July 31, 2024, 12:00 amArraez has won a batting title the last 2 years. He's hitting .375 with RISP this year. He's at .371 for his career. He's a little bit worse against lefties, but he's still a .307 hitter with RISP against them in his career. That's a guy I want swinging the bat. Kim is probably scoring on any hit that gets to the outfield. Even if Arraez hits into a double play you've got Profar who is hitting .345 off lefties, .333 with RISP and .429 off lefties with RISP this season coming up. I like my chances of getting a run in with those 2 guys coming up. With a different runner on 2nd and different hitters due up I could probably get behind the bunt. Fortunately Solano came up with the clutch knock to send Padres fans home happy.
With regards to Manny I had a feeling he was going to jack another one after I saw him get into a little back and forth with some Dodgers fans after he ran that foul ball down. He just seems like a guy who thrives off of that type of energy. Merrill deserves a ton of credit for following it up with the shot to tie it up too. The kid is clutch. That was a big time hard fought win.
Ho Hum....Padres vs Dodgers...always a good time. Ever since Pedro Guererro tripped Juan Bonilla coming around 3rd base and Lasorda losing his mind because the umpire called Bonilla safe at the plate for Obstruction these two teams always have an edge to them regardless of the standings.
Go Padres !!!

Quote from WindsorUK on July 31, 2024, 7:17 amInteresting data put together on the bunt vs. swing away debate, in extra innings, as the home team, tied or down by 1 run.
Numbers pretty overwhelmingly suggest to lay it down. Schildt obviously using the analytics there.

Should MLB Teams Be Bunting the Ghost Runner to Third in Extra Innings More Often?

I've read that breakdown and a couple others. The consensus seems to be that you increase your odds of winning about 3-5%. I wouldn't call that overwhelming. It's also worth noting that they're all looking at bunting with the first batter. That's not what happened in this situation. I would have felt better about Higgy bunting. Maybe the Dodgers setup the same situation by walking Arraez and Profar. Who knows?
I would be interested to see what the numbers say about all the different situations that could potentially be established. My main point in all of this is that the hitter at the plate needs to factor in. If we're talking about a .230 hitter with a high K rate like Higgy by all means put the bunt down. I want the best contact hitter in the game swinging the bat. Even if he hits into a double play you've got another shot with a guy who has been the most clutch hitter in the league by most measures at the plate. The bunt lets The Dodgers avoid both of them while setting up a situation where that same double play ends the inning. It also would have let them dictate the pitching matchup if Dave Roberts wasn't such an idiot. Did anyone else catch his post game comments? He said he wanted to bring Evan Phillips in, but he didn't know sending the pitching coach out for a mound visit meant the pitcher had to stay in. That's kind of baffling from a major league manager. Glad it all worked out. I just think getting 2 shots with Arraez and Profar probably gives you better odds than the bunt.

How many of those also put you in the same situation or better than the bunt if they happen during the Arraez AB?

Quote from ultratvfan on July 31, 2024, 8:22 pmPADRES BEAT L.A. and move up to 4.5 games behind the Dodgers. They have won 9 of their last 10 games and won the season series over the Dodgers.
Cease pitched well tonight and the BP was solid tonight. New pitcher Jason Adam was outstanding.
Bring on the Rockies!
GO PADRES!

Quote from Jeremy Hill on July 31, 2024, 8:30 pmIt's always good to beat the Dodgers. It's even better when we do it by beating up on Kershaw. We're starting to look dangerous.
