If they lose Yamamoto?
We need any break we can get! Gotta stay close through the summer if we want to catch these guys in September.
That said, I wouldn't wish anyone an injury that effects their ability to provide for their family( not even a Dodger or Raider!)
Let's get ourselves healthy, stay that way, and fight like hell!
LFGSD!!!
Not wishing…..just saying they’ve got SP issues “again” and better wrap him in bubble wrap

Quote from WindsorUK on May 15, 2025, 4:41 amSorry Mr. P......I wasn't insinuating that you had wished them injury. My apologies if it came across that way.
Definitely works in our favour though when the unlimited bank to the north has restricted access to their assets from time to time😉
We've had more than our share of missed games( Merrill, Cronenworth, Heyward, Arraez, Darvish, Musgrove- ALL former or current All Stars). Has any team ever had that many All Stars out at one time?
Major props to Schildt and everyone in that locker room for being a half game back of the Duds at this point. I don't quite get the same feeling I had about last years team( I REALLY thought we were going to win it all last year) yet....but it's getting there.
I've said it before- this is going to be a fun summer in San Diego!

Quote from fenn68 on May 15, 2025, 5:45 amTime to give Vasquez some love for his work this season. He goes 6 innings and allows only 1 ER ... plus control was better ... last night.
Hard to change past perceptions (he was not good last season) and the stats guys don't really like him in part because his high BB rate and low K rate and not a great swing and miss.
However, this season he has had 9 starts ... one real clunker (Apr 21 at DET where he only went 2 innings, 6 ER) ... but in the other 8 starts he has delivered an impressive 2.62 ERA.
Eight quality starts vs one bad start ... I will take that 8:1 ratio for the season out of the #4-5 SP no matter how his starts "look".

Quote from WindsorUK on May 15, 2025, 6:10 amNot a stretch to say he's been better than Cease, either.
Given that, and zero chance of Dylan being in SD in 2026, does this give AJ an opportunity to see what Cease is worth to an American League team for the rest of the year?
I know quality pitching is in demand so it's nice to have as many good arms as possible but better to sell high than get nothing when he walks in October, right?
Thoughts either way?

I'd be very surprised if AJP decided to trade Cease as long as the Pads are in contention for a playoff spot. It would take a vast overpay by some team for AJP to move him in my opinion. Say the Yanks offered Jasson Dominguez and a pitcher capable of filling the starting spot vacated by Cease. Go Pads!

A lot can change in the next two months, so it depends. Where is SD in the playoff hunt and how do they see themselves positioned to win through the playoffs to the World Series. Then layer in how the six main SP are performing.
Winning the WS is the top goal ... and a Cease (if at top form) paired with King would be the best 1-2. Darvish, Pivetta, Vasquez, and Kolek don't have the same top side potential at this stage. Plus with two months to go after the trade deadline exposes the staff to injury to one or more SP. If winning in 2025 is the objective ... hard to see trading any of the SP.
Also, getting immediate help for 2025 (think LF) is unlikely for a "rental" such as Cease or King ... maybe even Pivetta (controlled in 2026). A contender may want to deal for a "rental" but will not give a key cog to their current team ... offer will be prospects. A non-contender does not a "rental" and would want "prospects" for any established talent they would be willing to move.
So, likely they keep Cease in 2025, make a QO, get a draft pick. With Boras as his agent, he is going to hold for a major future contract plus the Padres will likely make their full court press towards King.
Look more towards potential deals using the likes of Bergert, Cruz, Nett, et al ... however not seeing any compelling players that will be on the market to help the Padres in 2025. Better bet, Padres deal for a fringe "rental" using middle level prospects and take some salary.

Quote from Randy Manese on May 15, 2025, 12:10 pmA shout out to Jake Cronenworth for a couple of fabulous plays on defense. He continues to shine even though he made a throwing error the other day. Overall, Padres infield defense has been very good to excellent with Bogaerts showing nice range and very good hands; Arraez surprisingly good at 1b with Manny just being Manny. Hit a playable ground ball to the infield and it almost always is a sure out. Combine that with all-star defensive plays in the OF and the Padres are hard to beat when their pitching is at its norms. Team still needs a few tweaks here and there but this is a playoff bound team if we don't get another rash of injuries.

Think the Padres have allowed the 2nd FEWEST unearned runs in the ML ... a tribute to steady defense ... something Shildt likes and should be clue as the the profile of future changes to the roster.
Side: Cronenworth sure seems to like returning to 2B full time ... has that helped his bat that is much better so far this season?

Quote from 3fingersplit on May 16, 2025, 6:25 pmJake is such a savvy player that he can play just about anywhere but when he feels comfortable playing defense...2B... then his bat really starts to lock in and that's a good thing for San Diego. Arraez, in my mind, has improved his play at 1B and that shows with his bat as well. I've never understood why people felt he was a liability at 1B...he has done fine and the whole infield has come together...Manny is Manny, Xander is playing a better than average SS and his bat is steady, Jake has 2B nailed down and Arreaz gives you one of the most solid bats in MLB...this is a dangerous team that will only get better provided they avoid the injury bug
