Leodalis De Vries

No telling with Preller.

His M.O. is to leave him at SS as long as he can so his value is at it's peak and then make a change if/when he has to.

Hopefully he calms down with some Pro experience and the throwing errors subside and its a moot point.

Would be 10 times better for SD if he could become at least an average to above average defensive SS and stay there for 5-6 years.

From BAs prospect newsletter today ...

Leo De Vries, SS, Athletics: A's top prospect Leo De Vries has looked the part of a future star this spring. The No. 11 prospect in baseball, De Vries went 1-for-3 with a double on Tuesday and now has 11 hits through 31 at-bats this spring. In addition to advanced bat-to-ball ability and barrel control, De Vries is beginning to show blossoming in game power. There’s a chance De Vries reaches the big leagues at some point in 2026, as he’s more than held his own in his first major league camp with the A's after they acquired him last summer in the Mason Miller blockbuster with the Padres.

I think people forget we can keep Miller for 2 seasons and could still trade him for a top 50-75 prospect if it makes sense at the time

I'd say we start looking into that sooner rather than later!

We seem to always be able to find arms to close out games( Suarez? Yates? Bell? Street? Beck? Davis? Rodney? Hand? Melancon?) but we seem to have a really hard time finding every day players.

I think the expiration/voiding of some large contracts and new ownership will allow us to replenish our every day line-up with quality players.  Padres/Preller have to live in a closing window of opportunity with their older players, so the win-now theme keeps us in the playoffs and we still have guys like Tatis, Jr. and Merrill that are still on the rise.  Could be some surprising free agents available after the 2026 season as well as trade opportunities in the 2026 season and during the off-season/post-lockout.

Expect the debate surrounding Miller becomes real next winter ... or the winter after depending on how the CBA consumes focus.

Miller, arguably the best closer in MLB under control for four years at a bargain price, actually fits the Padres in 2026 as a legit playoff contender ... too early to "gamble" on the others just for future prospects. Another season of Estrada, Morgan, Rodriguez, Hawkins, Marinaccio will define the depth in hand. Remember Adam and Morejon are FA after the season and likely will command big contracts and be gone.

Also, a second round of debate concerning Miller converted to a SP. Buehler, Marquez FA ... Pivetta, King opt out ... Musgrove (last season) and potentially a shadow of his former self ... leaving a starting staff of Vasquez and 4 ?????? Padres have had success in covering RP to SP and Miller has that "special TOR" arm. If the Padres want to contend in 2027-29 they may have to convert Miller since little of that quality climbing the systems (clearly not 4).

Yeah, we will likely have a completely different rotation going into ‘27.

Hoping a couple of our prospects pitch well enough-ugh this year to be a part of it
