Jakob Marsee

https://www.milb.com/news/san-diego-padres-2023-organization-all-stars

OF: Jakob Marsee (SD No. 12)
A+/AA: .274/.413/.428, 129 G, 16 HR, 46 RBI, 103 R, 98 BB, 46 SB
Marsee led the system in free passes, runs and stolen bases and was the only Minor Leaguer with at least 15 homers, 40 steals and 90 walks this season. He compiled more walks than strikeouts overall and posted a higher average (.286) and OPS (.858) after being promoted to San Antonio. The 2022 sixth-rounder has carried that late-season momentum into a blistering start in the Arizona Fall League.

Pretty much the same profile in the AFL, although his BA has cooled off.  Still gets on base and still steals bases.  Base stealing primarily because he gets good reads vice running speed, which is rated only average.  Agree that he doesn't have the wheels of a Homer Bush, Jr., Dillon Head or even Tyler Robertson, however, he gets a good jump; in this tool, about the same as Jackson Merrill, who also doesn't have great speed but can steal a base.

I remember listening to the TinCaps announcers commenting on MiLB TV that Manager Jon Mathews was challenging Marsee to do more, saying you can be more than just an on base guy, hitting singles and drawing walks.  At that time, Marsee had only one extra base hit, a double, for the entire month of April.  Marsee took that challenge and had 4 doubles, 1 triple, and 4 HRs in May although his BA dropped significantly as he adjusted to his new approach.  By June, Marsee was rolling and got his SA up in the .400's to equate to his OBP.  The Marsee you see in the AFL is that same Marsee who was willing to take the risk and accept the challenge.

I went back to MiLB and looked at those earlier games and saw that Marsee was taking a lot of good pitches (Grisham syndrome) and having to fight from being down in the count.  Looking at his games in August, you could see how much more aggressive he had become, hunting out pitches even early in the count that he could drive with impact.  Got to give Mathews and hitting coach Aaron Bray a lot of credit for the Marsee development as well as that of Pauley, who blossomed in the same way after coming up from Lake Elsinore.

The Coaches in the low minors definitely don't get enough credit for what they do.

The fact 99% of us don't know who any of them are is all you need to know.

Thanks for the informative post.

With Marsee rocketing up the system, what are everyone's thoughts on him being opening day LF?

I would think if he makes Opening Day, it would be in CF. I dont like his bat for a corner outfield spot, and I also think that IF they trade Soto, I think they will resign Profar and he will man LF.

I still dont think it was a coincidence that September winning streak started when Profar was added to the team.

I really wouldnt mind seeing an OF of Profar, Grisham, and Tatis with Soto as DH. Then maybe sub Marsee for Grisham.

Ready or not ... think there is a chance he is on the 26 man (LF or CF) if either Soto or Grisham is moved.

Padres cannot (will not) fill all the holes with veteran pieces under the $200MM payroll limit. So if they go all in on SP first by clearing LF/CF and backfilling LF/CF slots are not the priority ... the gamble on Marsee (or Pauley) might be made ... let the offense rely on the Tier 1 (Machado, Tatis, Bogaerts) and the Tier 2 (Kim, Cronenworth, Campusano). Then (if they moved Soto) becomes a grab bag of more marginal options.

Even if they hold on Soto ... Grisham is low hanging fruit as a sub-200 hitter ... maybe Marsee gets CF with Azocar or Tatis goes to CF and RF opens up for either Marsee or Pauley. Neither one has to be that good to be a more productive offensive option.

Somewhere in starting line-up/pitching the Padres will have to take some gambles with an unproven option ... so is one of Marsee / Pauley a better gamble than Groome / Otto as the #5 SP? That somewhat determines the priority of adding veteran pieces that cost.

I am 100% in the bring back Profar camp! He helps this team win.

Be happy to see him platoon at 1B and LF, getting AB's whenever and wherever.
