Padres’ Jairo Iriarte Opens Eyes With High-A Progress

August 1, 2023August 1, 2023

Righthander Jairo Iriarte threw a career-high 91.1 innings last year at Low-A Lake Elsinore. He was up to 61 innings at High-A Fort Wayne this year when he was promoted to Double-A San Antonio’s bullpen to allow the Padres to manage his workload.

Not that there isn’t a curiosity to see what Iriarte’s stuff looks like in short bursts.

So far, so good.

Does Iriarte stay as an SP? Or do we fast track him as a closer?

How best to utilise him? SP obviously would be best.

Iriarte gave up his 1st 2 runs today, however, it was Blanchard that gave up two hits that allowed the second run to score.  Iriarte had struck out 2 of the first 4 batters he faced, both swinging at 96 mph stuff.  He was missing a little bit with his slider but his FB up in the zone is money.  In his second inning out, he struck out the 1st batter looking and then was pulled after he gave up a walk.  Iriarte seemed to have trouble gripping the ball, going frequently to the resin bag.  The might account for his lack of control of his breaking stuff.  All in all, nothing to be concerned about - he looks very good in relief although I still would like to see him as a SP if he gains control of a better change-up.

Has he been moved to the pen simply because they want to limit his innings, or are they aiming to make him a full-time reliever?

It's only my opinion, but with an arm and the stuff Iriarte has, got to believe it is simply to limit his innings.  Mazur also has also only pitched in relief since the promotion to AA, but that jump from Hi A to AA is said to be one of the most difficult in a pitcher's progression.  San Antonio (unlike previous AA home Amarillo or AAA El Paso) and the Texas League plays out fairly neutral for pitchers so it is a good jumping off point directly to the majors, just like Wolf did.  My theory is that they wanted to also give both pitchers time to adapt to the stronger competition and gain confidence before inserting them back into the rotation.  They still have time to get over 100 IP if they get back into a starting role and SA already is in the 1st round of the playoffs.   The guy who will probably have his innings limited very soon is Snelling and he might not even be put in a RP situation but just put on the IL with a "tired" arm.

I've seen suggestion from multiple outlets that part of the reason they put Iriarte and Mazur in the bullpen was that they thought they might be able to help at the major league level this year if they end up needing more arms. They wanted them to get use to it just in case. I don't think it's very likely. It's still probably good experience to have. You never know what role you might need them to work in. Limiting their workload and keeping them active for the whole season is probably part of it too.

The kid’s only 21.  Impressive.  I haven’t seen him in any top-prospect lists, however, except for our organizational one, where he’s usually placed 5th or 6th I believe.  Have you guys?

San Diego flirted with the idea of using Iriarte in their Major League bullpen in the second half of the 2023 season and gave him relief looks in Double-A because his mid-90s fastball works so well. The 22-year-old right-hander makes that velo look rather effortless, and his fastball can show both good ride and run, drifting up and in on righties and up and away from lefties as he wears out the high armside corner of the zone.

Key Player From Dylan Cease Trade Has Reached Rock Bottom

Wasn't Thorpe part of that deal? (How's he performing)

I think Iriarte could use Niebla about now.
