Jacob Nix

Padres should DFA his ass.. That roster spot should go to the next best young man whobia serious about his career.. And I don't care if NIX is the next CY... Such a message will have more value throughout the organization from a culture and expectations point of view..  It would be a bold move cause he still somewhat of a top 10-20 prospect ..but long term could serve us well.. And just watch that 30 something ranked prospect who is saved from rule V make something of himself to finish that + Karma that baseball always seems to bring with it when things like this happen

So by your logic if Tatis got arrested for a drinking related misdemeanor the valuable thing for the Padres is to cut him? I know Tatis and Nix are very different players, but you said even if Nix is the next CY. Henry drinking and drug use is rampant in MLB and always has been. I’d agree with your stance if Nix got in a bar fight or hurt a woman or child, but he didn’t do any of those things. 23 year olds drinking too much one night is not a reason to cut ties.

Nah ..Tatis Jr is an mlb stud already he gets a pass.. We are talking about breaking an entry .home invation situation.. Not a drunk and disorderly... So yes if Tatis Jr got drunk and invaded someone's home.. At the very least I would suspend him.. You can't tolerate any kind of criminal activity in an organization ..being drunk and disorderly is probably as far as I would go as being ok... Remember we had an All Star SS named ECab who was busted with drugs and that basically ended his Padres career (really his pro career ) Giles got excommunicated after his incident.. Can't allow the criminal element in your organization it eats away at your core...

The CY comment with Nix was not assuming he was CY with us.. Its saying he gets DFAd (and I wouldn't care if down tge line he became a CY P for someone else) basically supporting the Pads for their decision to DFA him.. Its all..

It’s not like he knowingly committed a criminal act.

I’m not excusing him.....but getting drunk and mistakenly entering the wrong house via a doggy door isn’t the same as consciously breaking the law.

Let's not give him an absolute free pass either now. It wasn't a mistake. Even when you are drunk you have some idea what you are doing. If his story was that he thought it was his place he is lying. I seriously doubt he ever said that either. He was breaking and entering. I am sure he had no criminal intent, just drunken fun.

ECab had a domestic violence incident, a PED suspension, DUI and resisting arrest. Giles was a scumbag who abused women. I was happy when both were sent packing. Nix got drunk and mistakenly thought a cops house was the one he got off Air BnB...Huge Difference from the ECab, Giles situations.

Jacob made a huge mistake. Just because a 23-year-old went out drinking doesn't mean he isn't taking his career seriously. Every team gets wasted after advancing in the playoffs. It was an embarrassing mistake for sure but let's not cast stones. I've done plenty of dumb things in my life. He gets a second chance -- obviously, if it becomes a persistent issue, then we should be concerned. Hopefully he will learn his lesson and learn from it.

Does Nix deserve a second chance ... yes. However, from the employer's standpoint that second chance should carry a yellow warning flag with it and Nix be put on notice that this is not excusable behavior in the organization and his future is at risk with an additional incident.

Although drinking is socially acceptable and even getting drunk (if a person does no harm) is accepted .... going the next step and causing harm or breaking the law can't be just tossed off as just a young guy doing dumb things. This may be minor (unlawful trespassing) while getting totally wasted and driving dunk (with physically risk to others) should not be considered minor ... how does a totally wasted individual make that distinction? (note no idea if in this case Nix drove from wherever he was drinking to the scene of the trespassing). Clearly Nix's judgement was pretty impaired to not only not know his house but thinking it is a good idea to crawl through the doggie door. Seems any rational thinking was long gone.

Hope Nix realizes he was very lucky that this homeowner (police officer I understand) grabbed his taser and not his service weapon and the only issue is the trespassing.

I'm in between.  Nix frankly was already on the roster bubble with 8-10 spots needed on 40-man after W.S.

Pads MAY have been looking for innings/starts for more highly rated Morejon & Lawson anyway in AFL, but doubt Nix would have been dropped from Peoria roster if this hadn't happened (likely a non-prospect like Reiss Knehr).

Nix WAS the #17 "consensus" prospect (last guy in the "top tier") going into last season, but of course has fallen from there due to the essentially lost season due to injury.  I personally have always been lower on Nix, because even though he has a good fastball, he just can't miss bats.  You can argue if Dinelson Lamet should be starter or not, but he's a lock as a late inning guy out of pen.  I don't see how a guy like Nix who's probably the 10th-12th best SP option right now for the Padres, "falls back" to being a RP if he can't K guys at an average rate in minors?

Kevin, where I agree with you is that this story is dramatically overblown due to the way social media is now.  Not minimizing it, but the type of mistake that's probably happened many times in the past with other guys with maybe less sensational outcomes.  Cynically, Pads might see an opportunity to clear a roster spot with a greater chance of him not getting claimed due to the PR black eye the claiming team would have to endure not being worth it?

Agree that Nix was on the bubble before this incident and IF he gets DFA ... likely has nothing to do with the incident. Teams will preserve talent first and go the extra yard to maximize value.

Frankly Nix has been dropping has a prospect is being bypassed by a lot of  “younger” higher ceiling options. Then throw in his lost 2019 due to injury with potentially some concern about full health.

It is still Nix DFA vs. ? DFA and who helps the Padres more in 2020 or has a higher ceiling in the future. I would expect a lot of DFAs before that call ... maybe after already 9 drops and debating #10. Side: think his 2019 injury drained his trade value to a “throw-in” ... doubt this incident changes that.

I agree fenn68. He was never really a high ceiling prospect. He is a rotation filler at best. A #4 or #5. The Padres already have many of those who have shot right past him. The team has so many starters that I would imagine they will only be keeping the very best. Nix can be replaced with a quick trip to the 99¢ store. I think he is a very likely DFA.
