Fernando Tatis, Jr

FTJ 0-for-5 in the finale as EO wins the DWL Final Series 5 games to 1 ...

I found EO's web page ... http://www.estrellasorientales.com.do/

I can't find anything that says if there's more ... seems like I read before that DWL winner plays one more series against some other winter league champ ...

And so it begins 🙂

Bombs Away!

What impresses me the most about FTJ is the way he handles himself.

He's aggressive and intense but he doesn't get too down on himself when he strikes out or get too impressed with himself when he makes a great play or hits a HR.

He just has a casual "I belong here" look on his face at all times...unless he's grinning ear to ear when he scores or hits a bomb that is.

He doesn't look overmatched and he doesn't act like he's overmatched at the plate or in the field.

Really looks like he's been manning SS next to Machado for years.

So with the extensions to young guys like Jimenez and Acuna, what do you guys think we will do with Tatis?

Personally I don’t think we will do anything this year.....but I so think we will try to sign him to a similar deal to Acunas  next year.

What do you think?

Fernando Tatis has a HR in every major league City he’s ever visited.

😳

Given his projection and his start ... would not be surprised they are already trying to work an extension. Somewhere around Acuna's deal would (should / could) be a good be logical.

Acuna's advantage was he was the 2018 NL ROY without using his 1st year of service time (so still had 6 control years). Tatis may have an advantage of being a plus defensive SS who can hit.

Acuna got $100MM/8 years ($1-1-5-15-17-17MM for the control years and $17-17MM for the two FA years) plus the club got 2 option years at $17-17MM (vs. $10MM buyout of year one). IF Acuna is what they project ... a 10 year deal for $124MM. Great potential deal from ATL's standpoint. Acuna gets GUARANTEED MONEY for a decade and is set  for life even if he gets injured.

Jimenez got less but had done nothing yet in MLB.

Given the Padres aggressive approach with the kids in getting them to the ML and the spending on Machado / Hosmer ... think they will be aggressive in locking down Tatis ... and at 20 a 10 year deal would match Machado's timeframe and still get him to FA at his peak.

Has a rookie ever gone 30/30?

Interesting question. He does have a shot if he continues at this pace but he has 5/6th of a season to go so that could be good or bad. On pace for 36 HR / 30 SB give or take.

Tatis ... if everyone continues along their current route ... will have some strong competition for NL Rookie of the Year.  Peter Alonso (1B, NYM) is smashing the ball and playing quality defense. Would normally go with the SS over the 1B if it is close BUT Alonso being with the NY media support and a lot of national TV time ... has likely got some edge although I should note that Tatis is getting a lot more national buzz than a normal SD prospect would normally ... maybe being that is a partial offset.

If the Padres can stay relevant ... that TV exposure and national media will grow.
