Ethan Salas

Couldn’t find a thread for him?

2 for 3 with a walk in his professional debut.

Didn’t someone say he had to be 17 to play stateside?

From what I can find players just have to turn 16 by September 1st of the current signing period in order to be eligible to sign. Once they have signed teams can do whatever they want with them. It just doesn't leave much of a window for a 16 year old to debut and with most teams starting guys in the Dominican or the complex league it's pretty rare for a 16 year old to play with a full season affiliate. They said on The Storm broadcast that Julio Urias was the last guy to do it back in 2013.

An excerpt from a piece on The Athletic this morning.

The Padres believe Salas could and should reach the majors before his 20th birthday. If he does, he would become the league’s first teenage catcher since Ivan Rodriguez in 1991. Yeah, it’s ambitious. And catcher development is filled with pitfalls. There are no guarantees, even with someone as precocious as Salas.

So that "guestimate" would basically be Opening Day 2026.

Tatis MLB debut was at age 20 plus 85 days (opening day).

His progression was ROK/A- (age 17), A+/AA (age 18), AA (age 19 but lost half a season due to injury).

I know a catcher development is different than a SS but it is feasible given Salas' current state of development we see a similar progression. 2023 (A- / 17) - 2024 (A+/AA / 18) - 2025 (AA/AAA / 19) -2026 (MLB / 20). Could see a late season call-up in 2025 if the Padres catching situation is still in flux.

It is all up to Salas to live up to the hype ... but if he does he does not have much ahead of him in the system to slow down his progression. Even if (as I hope) Campusano takes the #1 catching slot late this year and holds in going forward ... the potential of a Campusano / Salas catching / DH combo would be compelling considering quality C is a premium in today's MLB.

If only Campy comes back, stays healthy…..and hits.

Any update on him?

Apparently they are moving him to a "lighter" cast on the thumb ... so progress.

Smooth ..calm cool and collected..

BTW- Salas has reached base 5 of 6 times with 2 BBs today..

Remember Salas Bday is 6/1.. so if he reaches in 2026 he will be 19

If he keeps this offensive degree of success he is going to end 2023 at A+.. His defense already looks good.. so if 2023 ends up in A+.. 2024 ST invite.. and if he does well AA to start 2024... could end up in AAA.. or just keep him in AA and 2025 ST could claim #1 C .. I would say maybe 2025 at 18? Or 2026 at 19..

Dude needs to be moved up.. A ball too easy for Salas

This article and those quotes by Salas brought tears of joy to my eyes.. Dude is going to be an all time great
