Efraín Contreras

He's earned his own thread 🙂

From today's DFR ...

Thanks to another strong outing by Efraín Contreras, the TinCaps took a 4-1 lead to the eighth, but Henry Henry, who’s been stellar in relief all year, had a rare rough outing to allow the Dragons to walk-off with the win. Contreras, the youngest of the three teenagers in the TinCaps rotation, matched his season high with eight strikeouts over six frames. That pushed his strikeout rate to 27.8%, good for fifth on the circuit, while his 5.8% walk rate is tied for third-lowest. The two have powered his FIP to 2.85. Only one other pitcher 20 or younger, and no teenagers, have a sub-4.00 FIP in the Midwest League.

Yikes, maybe it was premature to give this guy a thread ... from today's DFR ...

Efraín Contreras didn’t record an out as he gave up six runs. In addition to a pair of walks, the 19-year-old gave up three extra-base hits, including a grand slam that chased him from the game. While Contreras has had a strong campaign overall, he’s given up 14 runs in 15 innings this month while seeing a spike in his walk rate. The Juarez native already passed his innings total of 68.1 from three levels last season. Don’t be surprised if you see his workload dwindle over the final month of the season as he approaches 90 innings.

RHP Efraín Contreraspitched five innings and allowed just one earned run. The 19-year-old tied a season-high with eight strikeouts. The Juarez native has righted the ship after a pair of poor outings, allowing just two earned runs over his last 11 innings. Contreras’ 103 strikeouts rank eighth in the Midwest League.

In this pic, he looks like a good size kid ... https://i2.wp.com/madfriars.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/FW-Efrain-19-848.jpg?resize=300%2C390&ssl=1

From today's DFR ...

Eric (Chula Vista):

RHP Efrain Contreras is another interesting sign out of Mexico. What is his ceiling?

Kyle Glaser: Depends who you ask. There isn't really a plus pitch in there, and some evaluators would say there isn't an above-average one, either. But he can throw four pitches for strikes, and sometimes those guys make it up as a swingman/spot starter. That's kind of the optimist view of where Contreras ends up.
