Quote from LynchMob on July 5, 2018, 5:48 pmMaurico Rodriquez seems to be doing VERY well as a 17-year-old out of Venezuela for the DSL Padres!

Only 1 walk in 27 IPs over 6 appearances ... I don't see control like that very often in DSL ... is he a prospect, or does the lack of Ks (only 21 in 27 IPs) indicate he's one of the guys with "polish" but not "upside"?

Padres: Daniel Montesino, RF (No. 25), Rookie DSL Padres
Batting cleanup in the Domnican Summer League, Montesino put together one of his best games as a pro player against the DSL Reds. The 17-year-old belted his first professional homer and went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and two walks to reach base four times, a new personal best. Through 11 professional games, Montesino has only gone hitless twice and has only played one game in which he didn’t reach base. The outfielder’s Tuesday performance lifted his slash line to .297/.409/.459 for the season.PS. Whatever happened to Maurico Rodriquez?

Quote from Randy Manese on August 23, 2021, 11:40 amMontesino still going strong (OPS up to mid-900 level) and supported by Victor Acosta, (Jose) Karin Cordero, Sam Zavala and Eddy Beltre. Pitching had been very good early on but slipping lately. DSL team still one of the best in the league and this despite not being able to sign top international prospects after the 2016 signing surge; Montesino and Acosta represent the new opportunities to sign to players. Impact of that 2016 surge felt primarily in ACL this year and the fact there is no short season team like Tri-City where prospects who are not quite ready for Low A can go - lost year of 2020 really impacting these lower levels, especially in pitching development.

Quote from fenn68 on August 23, 2021, 11:53 amMaybe just my faulty memory but seems that the DSL roster is smaller than in previous seasons … unless they have some “non-roster” bodies there too.
On the other hand, seems that a number of prospects on ACL roster … in other years … would be in the DSL.
Maybe losing the short season team has been offset in part by a five round draft in 2020 and limited NDFR signings … then some housecleaning of prospects (team or player generated) plus the 2021 draft lagging a month into July just “forced” some players into ACL for DSL to generate a full squad for development (and maybe more advanced development) all of 2021.
Good to see some of the more heralded international prospects looking good.
