Padres LHP prospect Ryan Weathers struck out nine hitters over five shutout innings on Thursday for Low-A Fort Wayne.
Weathers scattered six hits, and he didn’t walk anyone while fanning nine. The seventh pick of last June’s draft, Weathers is still filling out, but he sits in the low 90s and should be in the mid 90s as he gets stronger. He also has a high spin rate on that offering, if you’re into that. His curveball and change are both above-average, and he pounds the strike zone with all three offerings. Weathers doesn’t offer elite upside, but he’s a strong pitching prospect in the loaded San Diego system. Expect to see him ready to roll sometime around 2021.

Weathers isn't still filling out and he probably won't add a lot of velocity going forward.

Isn't he just 19 years old and just out of high school? If he's not "still filling out", that seems abnormal. I assume the point here is ... he is very physically mature for his age and so his development will not include very much from that typical component of player development.

I would guess the Padres were fine with Weathers' physical projection coming out of HS at 6'1 / 200 lbs. They just like his arsenal of a low 90s FB with a couple of plus supporting pitches being successful into the ML.

From today's DFR ...
Ryan Weathers was scratched from his scheduled start and put on the disabled list after traveling to San Diego Saturday to have his arm examined. The team’s top pick in 2018 left his last outing after two innings with what the organization later described as a “bicep spasm.” There’s not more info available at this point.
