Colorado Rockies at San Diego Padres: Aug. 2-4

I'm not upset about him using Estrada. He had 2 days off between appearances and has been getting plenty of rest lately. He didn't have it and Shildt may have stuck with him too long, but I think the decision to go to him was fine.

My one ongoing complaint against Shildt is his lineup construction against lefties. Cronenworth needs to be on the bench against them. If he's going to be in the lineup he shouldn't be hitting 5th. I don't know how Eguy Rosario's RF work has gone in the minors. It might be time to bring him back regardless. It might be time for Tirso Ornelas and/or Brandon Lockridge too. I've got to think we can do better in RF while Tatis is out.

Eguy is mashing in El Paso, especially against LHP.  He did volunteer to play RF to try to get himself back in the majors but that didn't go that well; far better at 3b or 2b.  Tirso is another player who is doing damage in the PCL, however, his OF play is average, at best, and maybe slightly below because lack of range - he could not play RF at the major league level (but Peralta is not that much better).

Johnson can be optioned but unless someone hits the IL, you would have to release/DFA either Wade and Peralta.  I believe Wade is valuable because of his speed and in a pinch he can both play the OF and is the back-up catcher.  Would Ornelas be effective as a part-timer in LF?  I can see Eguy in a rotation with Cronenworth and Arraez but can Eguy be effective at 1b or do they Bogaerts there?   Team, as composed, has chemistry - let's see if they make any moves with the position players.

In this configuration, who backs up CF if Johnson is not here?

The Padres are going up against RHP Tanner Gordon who has given up 15 ER and 6 HR in 15.1 IP (8.80 ERA) and has a .373 BAA. There should be no reason in the world the Padres should not pound this guy.

They have a better lineup tonight. Should have has this lineup last night. Last night proves that lefty right matchups don't always work.

1. Arraez DH
2. Profar LF
3. Cronenworth 1B
4. Machado 3B
5. Bogaerts 2B
6. Merrill CF
7. Peralta LF
8. Kim SS
9. Campusano C

Well, his numbers are looking better now, go figure.

The Padres held on to beat the Rockies snapping a 5-game losing streak and winning their first home game this season against them.

Aside from the solo HR, Scott looked good. Martín Pérez was outstanding allowing only 1 ER in 6 IP. Suarez ears his 24th save. The BP held.

the Dbacks, Giants, and Braves all lost. Padres move back into 2nd spot and back up into a wild card spot.

Like take the rubber match. Waldron on the mound.

GO PADRES!

Padres take the series from the Rockies. Waldron pitch well and the offense came alive.

On to Pittsburgh.

GO PADRES!

6 of the next 9 games against the Pirates and I “think” we miss Skenes in both series.
