LHP Austin Gomber (2-7, 4.79 ERA, 78 K) vs RHP Randy Vasquez (3-6, 4.82 ERA, 46 K) - 6:40pm
RHP Tanner Gordon (0-3, 8.80, 12K) vs LHP Martín Pérez (2-5, 5.20 ERA, 63 K) - 5:40pm
RHP Cal Quantrill (7-7, 4.50 ERA, 90 K) vs Matt Waldron (6-0, 3.89, 109)- 1:10pm

The Padres coming off a huge sweep of the Dodgers in a two-game series and winning 9 of their last 10 games. Now they host the Rockies, who swept the Padres at Petco last May. The Rockies lead the season series 2-5 with 6 games to go. For some unknown reason, the Padres have always had a hard time beating this team. Let's hope they turn it around.

The Padres and the fans will get to see their new pitchers Martin Pérez and hopefully RP Tanner Scott.

Vasquez has faced the Rockies three times this season and twice he had given up 4-5 runs each game. He is coming off a rough start in Baltimore allowing 6 runs in 2 IP, but has a 1.61 ERA in 5 starts before that.

Pérez gave up 3 runs to the Rockies as a Pirate on May 3rd and is coming off a 6 IP shutout start against the Cardinals.

The third game as of this writing says TBD. But, I figure King, who has a 1.76 ERA in his last 5 starts. I don't know why Shildt keeps pushing back King. He should open the series and then pitch in Pittsburgh.

The offense appears to be heating up. They have scored 14 runs on 21 hits and 4 HR against the Dodgers beating two of their best pitchers. Let's hope they keep it going.

NL West Standings and games that matter
Dodgers(63-46) at Athletics(45-65) I don't expect any help from one of the worst teams in MLB. But, you never know.
Padres(59-51) vs Rockies(40-70) - 4.5 games back.
Diamondbacks(58-51) vs Pirates(55-53) - 5 games back. They are very much in it.
Giants(54-56) vs Reds(52-56) - 9.5 games back. Would not count them out of the wild card just yet.
Rockies(40-70) They are done.

Current Wild Card Standings and games
Braves(59-49) vs Marlins(40-69)
Padres(59-51) vs Rockies(40-70)
Diamondbacks(58-51) vs Pirates(55-53)
-------------------------------------------------
Mets(57-51) at Angels(47-60)

Shildt said on the radio that King is still dealing with some soreness from the hit he took from that comebacker in his last start. It sounds like they're just giving him a few extra days off as a precaution.

I'm not super thrilled about our pitching lineup this series. Now is the time to go for the friggin throat and absolutely annihilate these cakewalk teams we're facing the next few weeks. I understand King needs the day off, but I really hope that doesn't mean we're just going to throw Carl Edwards or something.

After that 2007 season the Padres have played like crap against the Rockies most of the time, I can't even put it into words what I think about it.

They Padres continue to lose to the Rockies. They have lost 5 straight games to them and made them look like a playoff caliber team.  I thought that with Blackmon removed the Padres would have a shot. Nope. The offense could not get it done,

I did not like Shildt's lineup and both Vasquez and Estrada did not look good.

The Padres drop to 3rd place because the Dbacks won, but only 1/2 game behind them. Currently, they are not in a wild card spot.

Let's hope they take tomorrow's game.

Let's Go Padres.

I don't get it. The Padres can beat tough top teams. Guardians, Orioles, and Dodgers, but the they can't beat the cellar team Rockies that came in this series with a 40-70 record and the worst BP in MLB.

While not efficient Vasquez ended up with 5ip and only 1 er allowed.

I’ll take that from him every time….this loss was on the offense and Estrada.

Gomber is now 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA in 3 starts against us this year. He's 1-7 against the rest of the league.

Don't often second-guess Shildt, but I put this one on him for bringing in Estrada - again!  Estrada had some major workload on both the last road trip and against the Dodgers given his lack of successful history so with the new bodies on the team plus guys he hasn't used that often recently, he should have brought one of them in.  I was hoping for Adam because it was only a 1 run lead and you needed to shut them down.  Estrada has slipped the last 7 games in terms of his WHIP/control, so to me, Adam would have been the right match.  Jacob had been fantastic but the horse was already out of the barn with Estrada, so the run he gave up really didn't matter.

Shildt - use the revamped bullpen - we paid a lot in prospects to get them!

I agree, Estrada deserves a break based on his workload over the last month. I understand the decision to bring him in, on paper, but in practice he needs a breather. He already had Jacob warm. Let him come in.
