Colorado Rockies at San Diego Padres: April 14-6

Tweak in his right elbow....ugh.....

I guess Waldron is next man up.

Even is this is not determined to be a serious injury ... this early in the season would expect the Padres to be cautious and put him on the 15 day IL. Want him "healthy" down the stretch.

Agree Waldron is the quick fix.

Hello Lucas Giolito is that you?

Anyone have any idea what is going on with Giolito. Pretty sure a lot of teams were "interested". Apparently he is not budging from a demand that no team thinks is reasonable.

With Waldron and Canning on the come ... and given the budget ... even if Pivetta is out an extended period doubt they gamble on Giolito.

More like save their limited resources for a trade deadline move if needed.

How sweet it is! The Padres sweep the Rockies to extend their streak to five.

Pitching was solid. Unfortunately, Pivetta was pulled due to right elbow stiffness. He was removed as a precautionary measure.

The offense came alive and Ty France was hot today going 3 for 3, double, HR, and 1 RBI.

Bring on the Mariners!

GO PADRES!

Stammen says it was a combination of elbow stiffness and Pivetta being under the weather. He also said that depending on how he feels tomorrow he may not need imaging and there's a world where he makes his next start. That sounds like great news. Based on his reaction right before he walked off of the mound and the organization's history of drastically underreporting injuries I'm just not sure I believe it.

Yeh, the normal game is to be overly optimistic to the public ... so holding my breath but not just buying Stammen's comments.

Just go back to Musgrove's comeback from TJ ... comments that he could be back for the 2025 playoffs ... then after another 5-6 months did not make it through ST but not to worry except now another month and just light tossing.

If it is "similar" to his ST issue and that may be "similar" to his issue in Boston ... and it is an elbow ... have to be at least cautious lest they blow it out for the season.

I'm encouraged because Niebla and Stammen  recognized there was a problem almost immediately, in fact, several pitches before they came out of the dugout.  This leads me to believe they saw this kind of thing happen before - likely in ST - and knew they had to get him off the mound as soon as they could.   If the MRI shows no structural damage, still need to put him on the IL and let him rest that elbow for 2-3 weeks.

Waldron is the next guy up but have to look beyond to Sears because Canning is definitely not ready.  Luckily, the Padres bats are starting come alive and hoping the Padres can play at least at the .500 level while Pivetta is out.  It's a long season and got to hope everyone will be back and healthy when playoffs are on the line.

May not have to put him on the IL. Including the day off today, the Padres will have 3 days off for the next 10 days.

Pivetta's next turn in the rotation is on Saturday against the Angels up the road and then will open the series against the Dbacks in Mexico City, which is 11 days from now.

They could have a BP day in Pivetta's start against the Angels starting with Hart, activate Musgrove if he is ready, or make trade.

Neither Musgrove nor Canning are near ready to assume a ML starting role. Not any path to a trade for "a quality" SP ... even one just firmly better than Waldron.

I would guess that if there is any risk to Pivetta being lost for a long period (or the season) by having him pitch in the next two weeks ... send him to the IL. Waldron has been effective in AAA ... ready to return from the IL ... out of minor league options ... best call-up option.

I would not opt for a bullpen day which effectively messes up the available relief arms the day before and day after ... putting all three games at higher risk.

Play it safe ... IL Pivetta ... call-up Waldron ... reevaluate in 15 days ... and maybe that has Pivetta returning and Marquez out (or IL).

If Canning can go 5 innings in his next rehab start maybe he pitches for SD in his next start in about a week?

Maybe depends on how Waldron/Marquez/Buehler all do in their next starts
