Cincinnati Reds at San Diego Padres: June 8:10

Should've been a sweep, but the way things have been going I'm just happy to see them take a series. That was a big win with so many guys down in our bullpen. Taylor seems to have staked his claim to the LF job for the time being. Not to overreact to 2 games, but I think they should keep Wagner up when Bogaerts rejoins the team. Bowen and Johnson are largely redundant and Song looks overmatched. Send any of them out and keep Wagner around to hopefully provide a little more offense.

Tell me you weren’t worried when Peralta came into a tie game in the 9th and immediately gave up a hit to put the go ahead run on base.

That DP was a game saver IMO

Padres return to the #3 playoff slot by themselves ... only one loss more than PHIL for the #2 slot and and are 3 games over .500.

Considering the offense is last in the ML in almost all categories (around an historically bad level) ... ERA for SP is a lowly 21st using a string of low cost reclamation projects (Buehler, Canning, Giolito, Marquez, Waldron) backing up a more low to mid rotation arm in Vasquez with King being the only upper rotation option ... and they sit in a playoff slot is just hard to understand. Sure the RP has the 2nd best ERA but also have a high usage (concern over a full season). Statistically this team should have a losing record.

Stepping back from a SD focus ... beyond ATL, LAD, and MILW (the three Division leaders) the rest of the league is also playing poorly (most worse than SD). So, as of now, the challenge for the Padres to make the playoffs is not that high ... and we have seen over the past few weeks Merrill and Tatis have started to heat up (but others have regressed) ... argument for the Padres staying in the playoff race heading into the trade deadline.

If so, we should see the debate with some saying to go all in to secure a playoff slot and since never know how short series play out and can't win unless you are in. 2027-29  has little chance of competing. Buyer at trade deadline. Others will look at this team and see a SP staff that will not competed against the top teams and an offense the will get shut down by top pitching ... don't trade the future for a shot at impossible odds (fools dream) ... Seller at trade deadline (and add prospects for the future).

We have six weeks for this top play out ... and it will be impacted by the status (and effectiveness) of Pivetta and Musgrove who, in theory, could provide two upper rotation arms.

At this moment expect most have a clear view of which route to take ... just pretty sure that view is not the same for all. This almost has to play out all the way to the deadline.

Meanwhile ... given this teams metrics ... is Stammen manager of the year candidate for having the Padres with a winning record and playoff slot vs an expected losing record?

While it was great seeing Nando getting his 2nd HR of the year( especially a walk-off!), the fact that the launch angle was only 18°????? Man, dude still isn't getting enough lift.

I'm happy, especially as a lead off hitter, to see him getting hits all over the field but I can't wait for him to get underneath some pitches and put together a 11-13 HR month this summer.
