Chicago Cubs at San Diego Padres: April 14-16

Vasquez has a pretty drastic difference between his expected numbers and his actual numbers so far. However, he has also made pretty drastic changes to his pitch usage. He's throwing his cutter and sweeper a lot more and his 4 seamer and sinker a lot less. He got good results with the cutter and sweeper last year while the 4 seamer and sinker got hit hard. The change seems to be working in the early going. Niebla probably deserves some credit for getting him to attack with his best weapons. He's not going to maintain a sub 2.00 ERA, but he looks like he should at least be a serviceable starter.

Need the win today to guarantee we are at least tied in the season series with the Cubs for tie breaker scenarios.

Sweep even better....

That's right Mr. P, 1 of the next 2 would be awesome, as we know, it's all about winning series.

Did Connor Joe just go to collect his paycheck?

The Padres homestand streak ends at 11. But the Padres remain atop the NL West and still have the best record in MLB.

Vasquez was outstanding. The offense had oppportunities to score, but could not get it done.

Tomorrow is a must win to take the series.

LET'S GO PADRES!

Game 3 Lineup

2. Arraez DH

All of our losses have come in games started by a LH Starter.

So,that means we are undefeated in games started by a RH Starter.

I'd be OK with this trend continuing until October.

Even though today's game is against a LH SP, I feel comfortable with this line-up.  Forsee a happy flight to Houston.  GO PADRES!

Been worried about the Padres vs LHP since ST ... BUT ... on a comparative basis with the other teams their offensive production vs LHP has been very good despite the losses. Consider their MLB rank vs LHP and RHP:

v LHP ... v RHP

BA ... 248 (9th) ... 292 (1st)

OBP .. 325 (9th) ... 357 (1st)

SLG .. 401 (8th) ... 425 (7th)

wRC+ .. 106 (7th) ... 129 (5th)

So, v LHP the Padres are 6% above average and in the top 1/3 in all the metrics but from a comparative basis much worse than them v RHP. I guess we lose perspective of how much every team struggles vs LHP. Losses at this point fall in the "small sample size" catch-all.

However, an upgrade that provides a stronger hitter vs LHP would be good.

That is true. That maeans they still have a winning streak and a losing going. They are 14-0 against RHPs and 0-4 against LHPs. Let's hope they snap the losing streak today.
