Giants were one of the few (if not only) teams that would take on the remaining 8 1/2 years on his contract at an AAV around $31MM per year.
The return to Boston is not that impressive ... but they are probably happy to get rid of him (and his contract) since they have abundant offense (and more coming). Opens up some payroll space for them to pursue SP.

Probably should give up trying to deal Bogaerts ... can't see anyone wanting his contract unless the Padres threw in someone like Merrill or ate most of the contract (which makes no sense for the Padres). Padres have no SS replacement of ML quality.
Should note that out of the current qualified SS (25) in ML ... Bogaerts is the 7th BEST defensive SS (dWAR). Yeh, bad contract as he is not hitting ... but stuck with that.
Actually looking ahead ... INF has Machado and Cronenworth but Arraez (also over paid going FA) leaves nothing near term for the middle INF so I would suggest a "bad" Bogaert is better than any alternative. DeVries is still a question years off but who else is in the system that in projected as ML quality SS? No one has yet emerged.
I don't buy into the "always can find a .... ". If that were really true we would not be living with a sub-par LF or C situation.

Roki Sasaki moved to 60-day IL.
I knew when he signed with the Dodgers, he would end up on the IL.

Austin Hedges has a .478 OPS….which is up from last years .423 OPS….and still has a job.
Is he really that good defensively still?
