I am glad the Padres came away with no less than a split. Now they are are facing the Phillies, who are  a tougher team.

And then Diaz air mails one into CF, putting the tying run on 3rd!

Thankfully, Estrada wiped out Carroll.

Don't forget a bad passed ball by Maldonado earlier in the game. IF defense is the justification for Diaz / Maldonado, not seeing it. Their handing of the pitchers have to be incredibly good to offset their physical defense and lack of offense. Just an update vs the catchers with > 100 PA (50 players):

Diaz ... 45th in WAR ... 22nd in dWAR ... 41st in wRC+

Maldonado ... 48th in WAR ... 42nd in dWAR ... 47th in wRC+

At this point I think they have to go outside the organization for an upgrade ... maybe over pay. I want Campusano to be an upgrade but the logical part of my brain tells me he would not be. His defense over his ML time is in the zone of Maldonado but with reports that some pitchers don't like to pitch to him ... so likely viewed by the Padres as providing worse overall defense. Can his offense offset that ... well he totally failed in his earlier call-up this year and his recent EP offense has not been compelling considering hitting .300 as did Brooks, Johnson, Lockridge ... all who have failed to hit in the ML. Think Padres have given up on him (at least the decision makers) and keep him around as insurance for the rest of 2025 and in case they don't come up with two new catchers for 2026.
