All Time Favorite Padres
Quote from MrPadre19 on December 6, 2021, 12:35 pmI'll start:
C-Benito Santiago---His Rookie hit streak was amazing to witness and his throwing from his knees was always cool.
1b-Mike Ivie---He lived in my neighborhood when I was a kid...my Brother helped him move.
2b-Tito Fuentes-Watched him play live in the "early" days of Padre baseball. He would bounce the bat off the plate and catch it before each at bat....and I just like to say "Tito Fuentes"
SS-Fernando Tatis Jr-I mean....does this need an explanation?
3b-Ken Caminiti-this was a tough one.It will probably end up Machado when its all said and done.I was super disappointed when I found out he made the decision to use PED's.
LF-Gene Richards-He still leads all Padre leftfielders in WAR,Runs,Hits,SB's,and total bases.-This would easily be Rickey Henderson if he had been a Padre for more than 2 seasons.
CF-Steve Finley-Still holds the HR record for Padre Center fielders.I'm hoping that this answer is an easy "Trent Grisham" some day.
RF-Tony Gwynn-Duh!...However,Will Venable is still one of my favorite all time padres.
SP-Jake Peavy-his intensity has still not been matched by any Padre.
RP-Trevor Hoffman...although the best season ever by a Padre Relief Pitcher is still Mark Davis in 1989 with 4.4 WAR.

Quote from WindsorUK on December 6, 2021, 3:18 pmCatcher- gotta be Benito! Has a catcher EVER come onto the scene like him? The throws down to 1st, from his knees, BEHIND left handed batters????
1B- No idea why but I really like Willie Montanez! Don't remember him being really good at much but just liked watching him at the plate.
2B- Robbie Alomar. Spent some time with Robbie while he was in SD( we had mutual friends) Good fun.
SS- Ozzie. I love Tatis but Ozzie was a neighbor and let us play hoops with he and his brother Clovis.
3B- Caminiti. Dude was a legend.
LF- Carmelo Martinez. Dude had no business playing LF but put in a solid rookie season to help us to the Series.
CF- Jerry Mumphrey. That was one smooth Dude!. 300 hitter, 50+ steals, gold glove quality defense.
RF- TG. Dave Winfield is a legend but Tony.... he IS the Padres.
Not sure I can pick a pitcher but yeah, Peavy would be near the top of the list.
We haven't had a lot of good baseball in San Diego but we've certainly had good players....and interesting ones!

Quote from BoosterSD on December 7, 2021, 7:47 amC - Santiago IMO is the choice, the excitement that he brought to this position made noise across baseball.
1B - For me its Wally World, Wally Joyner. That commercial he made with the ball imprint on his glove hand from catching throws from Caminiti was pure gold! Honorable mention to Garvey, as his playoff performance against the Cubs is legendary.
2B - Alomar, heart broken when we traded him away. Honorable mention to Quilvio Veras.
SS - Just because Ozzie was gone by the time I started watching baseball, I will go with Tatis. Honorable mention to Khalil Greene, man he had a couple of really nice seasons in SD.
3B - Despite the juice, still love Caminiti.
LF - Greg Vaughn, brought legit power to the 98 team, and was a decent fielder.
CF - No doubt, Finley was a joy to watch on both sides of the game.
RF - Only one choice, #19!!!!!
SP - Love Peavy, but will go with Andy Ashby. What a battler he was.
RP - Gotta with Hoffy, not only cuz he was dominant, but I also called a couple of games for his son here in AZ.

Quote from WindsorUK on December 7, 2021, 11:56 amCome on the rest of you guys!!!
There must be some obscure player over the years that for one reason or another, caught your fancy?
Any Jack Clark love out there? Rickey Henderson? Stanley Jefferson? Rupert Jones? Juan Bonilla? Kurt Bevacqua? Cito Gaston? George Hendricks?
Man, there are LOADS of lovable Padres left.

Quote from WindsorUK on December 7, 2021, 2:21 pmI just pulled up the roster for our first team in '69.
Did you guys know that hitting guru Walt Hriniak was a Padre that inaugural season? Played in 31 games as a 26 year old catcher.

Quote from padscharg on December 7, 2021, 3:57 pmC - Santiago was before my time, but I always liked Ramon Hernandez. Shoutout to Carlos Hernandez as one of the Spanish language broadcaster and like most, the 98 Padres all have a special place in my heart.
1B - Loved Wally, but I loved Adrian when he was here. His exit definitely soured me on him, but he was the whole team for a little while there.
2B - Really liked Lorretta both on and off the field and enjoyed Barfield in his brief time.
SS - Tatis Jr..... Loved Khalil too though
3B - Hey Caminiti. Manny getting up there though.
LF - Greg Vaughn, not many other standouts to me.
CF - Finley is still my mom's favorite Padre. Enjoyed Mike Cameron a lot. Surprised no Eric Owens love yet.
RF - Mr. Padre, enough said
SP - Peavy is my favorite, but shoutout to Brown, Hitchcock and Chris Young and I always liked Adam Eaton for some reason.
RP -Hoffman, like Gwynn always a class act on and off the field and the best entrance in sports.

Quote from Lance Richardson on December 7, 2021, 5:05 pmThe All Character squad:
C- Benito. We haven't had any eccentric or quotable catchers, but Santiago was exciting.
1B- Willie Montanez. He had a 30-homer rookie year in Philly in 1971, and was never as good again. But he was still a hot dog by the time he made it to the Padres.
2B- Tito Fuentes. Another flamboyant hot dog. I grew up rooting for some really bad ballclubs, so all we could really delight in were the personalities. Tito had no equals.
3B- I can't decide between Doug "The Rooster" Rader and Graig Nettles. Both great quotes and red-asses. Rader was kind of a poor man's Nettles on the field. Same skills... power, some walks, thrilling defense. Rader was pretty good at those thing, but Nettles was way better at each.
SS- Enzo Hernandez. I gotta go with the first shortstop I remember. The Enzo could steal a base a field the position, but was a comically bad hitter. So comically bad that he wins this spot. The Baseball Jesus (Tatis) is probably the better choice as far as personality goes, but he's too damned good at baseball to be on this team.
LF- Rickey. DUH. This violates what I said about Tatis, but henderson might be a greater character than ballplayer... and he's one of the twenty greatest players of all time.
CF- Ruppert Jones. Rooooooooooop....
RF- "Downtown" Ollie Brown. For the rocket arm and for the nickname.
LH Starter- Randy Jones. For the 73MPH fastball, the afro, and the BBQ.
RH Starter- Ed Whitson. Anyone who remembers Whitson shirtless during the 1984 brawl with the Braves won't argue with me.
LH Reliever- Craig Lefferts. We're stockpiling participants in the brawl, and with good reason.
RH Reliver- Rollie Fingers. Cannot leave the mustache off of this squad.
UTL- Kurt Bevaqua. So Lefferts has his separated-at-birth brother on the squad.

Quote from 84padres on December 8, 2021, 7:10 amRandy Jones is the reason I started rooting for the Padres in 1975 . I live near Detroit and was a pitcher in a 13 to 15 year old league that couldn't throw hard but had a big slow curve . Jones was awesome to watch winning 20 in 75 then 22 and Cy Young in 76 while throwing an 80s MPH fastball. Also loved Tito Fuentes and tried to copy his bat off the plate trick. And the brown and yellow uniforms were great.
