30-man Active O.D., 40-man MLB, 60-man "Taxi" Rosters

If Mateo really to 45-IL, I would now predict 1st 2 options down to 28 are Almonte & Perdomo.  Olivares hasn't played much, but his CF capability (& speed) becomes more important without Mateo.

That leaves either Naylor or France as potential option down when Hosmer returns.  Even though Naylor not going to play @ 1B with JC emergence there, same is equally true for France, and Pads will face more RH SP than LH SP.  Even if/when Hosmer @ 1B, JC @ 2B vs RH SP, there is still more of a role for LH DH Naylor than RH DH France....  France down.

Still trying to find a second confirmation of that pre-game comment but for now I will assume it is valid. Just by putting Mateo on the 45 day ... eliminates his ability to return into Sept (and at that point they probably just would not).

I will pick Olivares as today's assignment to the alternative site .... hot start but cooled off and is now little used. Better served getting rep at the alternative site and daily coaching.

When Hosmer returns a likely debate between Naylor and Almonte with France staying as the RHH PH. Naylor is the better hitter (but only LH) and Tingler has finally put in the OF so maybe workable. Almonte may be a switch hitter but has not looked at all good in his ABs but is better in the field.

I know we may not love the idea .... considering Tingler is going to play Grisham every day in CF and if there is a need for a longer term CF replacement a call-up is a quick fix ... take the risk for a day or so with Myers or Pham or Profar to "cover" CF. Almonte most likely will be on the traveling taxi squad.

Probably would be most comfortable with the France / Naylor DH .... either Profar or Cronenworth at 2B with the other versatile enough to fill in a lot of spots if need. Plus France ... at least as an insurance policy .... allows for Tingler to sub in game for either Hedges (if offense is needed) or Mejia (if defense is needed).

=======

Perdomo makes sense as the pitcher down but just that nagging back logic of Tingler skipping Lucchesi / Quantrill's start ... warming up Quantrill for relief yesterday .... and the arrival of Patino who every indication is targeted to start before too long.  Makes me think POSSIBLY a move with Lucchesi or Quantrill. Since Quantrill out of the pen seems to work for the Padres but Lucchesi does not appear to fit (so far) ... is Lucchesi more at risk?

I'm looking to strengthen our RH pinch hitting/DH this year without giving away the farm or paying too much.  My limited search leads me to Todd Frazier as a possibility and probably a more reliable hitter than France.  Texas not going anywhere this year and might bite.  Don't see any prospects from within.  Anybody else feel this way and have a player in mind?

Feel that way:  Yes.  RH DH a weakness b/c of trading Franmil Reyes (I'm totally fine with the trade; didn't know we were going to DH in 2020).  Don't have a player in mind.  I personally was thinking more next offseason a pure RH bat first/only DH/1B guy to compete with France.

Yeh, expect Preller to make some sort of move ... actually Acee implied that too today but no "timing".

Also, some discussion of "how big" a move if they are really going for it this year.

DH? 2B? C? .... all a spots for possible upgrades since they are all "underperforming" so far this season.

No idea who is (or will be) available before the trade deadline ... and any asking prices. Don't even know which teams think they are out of it (we may but do they?)

Padres hit LHP well but soft with RHP ... maybe an established quality LHH for DH or RF (Myers to DH)? Bring in Vasquez as a catcher upgrade and Boston is going nowhere? Padres always can go all in and try to pry Merrifield for 2B (not very like to happen).

Something should happen ... big? small? ... but something.

It's 6:34 P.M. and no announcement of roster changes.  Something must be up.

Lucchesi and Naylor optioned.

Neither a surprise but there's probably going to be many guys going up and down frequently this year.  Still think Preller has something in the works that might come to fruition before Hosmer is eligible to come back on Saturday.

Naylor looks like he's done....something has not been right with him and if he wasn't playing for the Padres he would not be in the Big Leagues....he has a lot of work to do....he is limited from a defensive side and he hasn't shown enough at the plate along with base running errors to beat Cronenworth, Garcia and France out and keep a roster spot....his best hope is that Preller finds somebody to take him.

Sounds harsh but the eye test doesn't lie

Luchesi is just way to busy on the mound...his delivery takes way to much effort, his release point varies from pitch to pitch and he has no "Smooth" to his motion....certainly does not have any margin for error

75 - 90 pitches to get through 3 innings is not working.....he also has a lot of work to do. I hope Quantrill at least gets a chance to start one game and claim the spot he actually won in Spring Training....We know Patino is going to stick and Gore can't be far behind him
