Next pitching cut ... likely as part of dropping to 28 ... on the 8th might be "interesting" given the limited number of arms with minor league options (at least of the ones on the bubble). Think Perdomo may be at risk to be optioned before they take the DFA route on Guerra, Stammen, or Johnson ... given the state of ML pitching all likely would be claimed. Don't see Strahm in that discussion as a LHP.
Keep any eye out in the next few games for a slight "tweak" in a RP sending them to the IL .... just saying could happen.

Does anyone know the current waiver rules (not sure they are the same as in the past for an August). IF a player is put on waivers and is NOT claimed in the 72 hour window ... under some situations that player could be recalled from waivers ... no harm no foul. Thinking someone like Stammen if clears waivers and becomes a FA ... Padres pay him for this and next year (his contract) but if someone claims him the new team takes the contract. If the pullback is in play ... and the Padres want to move on from Stammen (as opposed to the other RP) that might be a gambit to clear him and save money. IF they pull him back, maybe Guerra is DFA next or they option Perdomo.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 4, 2020, 4:31 pmDon't think they'll DFA Guerra - too much potential. Could send down Perdomo or even Lucchesi, if he looks awful and Patino is to take his place in the rotation after this week. Initially, I was thinking Strahm but he's actually not been that bad despite his HRs allowed - kind of like Pagan's so so performance. Hadn't thought about Stammen but we'll have to see how he's used this week and how effective he is; his job could be on the line but seems Tingler prefers to have these vets around. I think he'd have to be really bad this week to be DFA'd.

Quote from fenn68 on August 4, 2020, 4:54 pmI would agree that Perdomo down is the logical choice if we consider the needs over the rest of the season and the probability of injuries requiring call ups.
The decision to maintain the 28 for the rest of 2020 really helps the Padres decision making.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 5, 2020, 9:50 amAs we head toward cutdown day, here's what I have for sending players out who have options remaining:
SP: Davies, Lucchesi and Quantrill (Lamet and Paddack also but doubt they would be sent down)
RP: Hill, Pagan, Perdomo and Strahm
Position Players likely on the bubble: Almonte, France, Naylor and Olivares and those that are likely not - Cronenworth, Grisham, Hedges, Mejia and Tatis
It would seem there could be a very well worn path with our pitchers depending on team match-ups. With Patino up and likely to get a very long look unless he completely bombs, guessing that Perdomo is probably the one unless they decide to put Patino in the rotation sooner than later. In that case, probably Lucchesi or Quantrill. Other pitchers could be on that shuttle based on lack of performance, team match-up and how guys like Morejon, Baez and even Gore are doing at the alternate training site.
Naylor coming to life recently so its likely Almonte or Olivares. Given that Almonte is a switch hitter, even though Olivares is a better defender, think he'll be sent down keeping France and Almonte on the bench for now. When Mateo is ready that is going to be a tough call; it could be France or it could be Profar DFA'd. Profar has value as a switchhitter but not so much if he doesn't hit.

Quote from fenn68 on August 5, 2020, 11:04 amPerdomo seems like the guy to be optioned while they give Lucchesi / Quantrill one (or two) more shots at locking down their roles. Tingler did imply that Patino may get a start sooner than some think ... maybe that will just be a "break" giving the other starters an extra day of rest in a long streak of games or to realign the rotation so Paddack, Lamet, Richards get the more difficult opponents.
Accept new age stats or not ... saw one on Profar that, based on his ABs, he SHOULD have .259 BA. Guessing that is factoring in his hard contact rate and the quality of the defensive plays on his batted balls. Either way, with injuries and the potential need for versatile players, Profar's ability to play all the INF and some OF along with being a switch hitter keep him around. Some risk in going all in on Cronenworth based on such a small sample size or Mateo who was not much of a hitter in the minors.
If they drop a position player for the cut to 28 ... then Hosmer ... then Mateo, that could be quite dicey. If Profar starts then Garcia (L), Cronenworth (L), and Mateo are on the bench ... only one remaining slot for Naylor (L), Almonte (#), Olivares, and France. If the assume Mateo / Profar can cover some OF ... maybe the OF skill is not primary which would give an advantage to France as a RHH but Cronenworth's showing at 1B and Machado lock at 3B might offset that. Olivares "inexperience" might not play well in a playoff run and he may be better served at the alternative site. Almonte is a switch hitter who can play all 3 OF slot (not really well) with a lot of ML experience for the bench might get the not vs. Naylor who is LHH and limited defensively even though he may be the better hitter ... unless the better hitter with the DH plays up if Tingler finds him "acceptable" in RF.
A lot if ways to spin those last 3 position player options.

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 5, 2020, 12:08 pmI would guess Olivares to alt. site and Almonte DFA'd.
Then Naylor to alt. site if/when necessary

Next 2 down will be: A RP & an OF. The RP will likely be Perdomo, but COULD be Hill. If Hill, it might indicate Pads plan to use Patino as an "opener" or even traditional starter.
The OF is likely Olivares. Could be Almonte, but I think he's there to be a poor man's version of Olivares & Naylor costing only one roster spot (i.e. Switch hitter).
Hosmer & Mateo: Likely Naylor & France down. Again, could be Almonte. Not ideal @ DH or OF with only 4 guys of 28, but guessing Pads will look at Mateo and his 80 speed as the 5th OF. Overall there's too many 2B options with: JC, Profar, Garcia, Mateo, & France. In a "normal" season, could only have 3 of these guys active. Even with the 30-man, if Mateo hadn't gotten Covid, he would be active, and it might have been Cronenworth optioned down.

Quote from fenn68 on August 5, 2020, 1:40 pmFirst two moves tomorrow ... Hosmer (might be back on Saturday but probably before they leave on a 9 day road trip on Monday) and maybe Mateo (will have been at the alt. site for about 2 weeks as an IL player).
So, likely we will have the answer soon.

Quote from fenn68 on August 5, 2020, 6:16 pmOn the pre-game today they said Mateo was being moved from the 10 day IL to the 45 day IL. No further elaboration. However by my count that gets the 40 man down to 39 with 4 players on the 45 day IL (Mateo, Wingenter, Espinosa, and Munoz). Plus the may have another move since Castillo is still on the 10 day.
Again, must have some exceptions to the old rules that players could only go on the 45 day IL if the 40 man was full and the team wanted to add someone to the 40 man. So?
Either way, it looks as though someone's ML job has been spared for now.

Quote from Brian Connelly on August 6, 2020, 11:30 amWell, I was tying myself in knots trying to figure out how to get Mateo on the active roster.... solves THAT issue!
Unless he really got injured practicing at the alt site (possible), this really smacks of convenient roster manipulation in Pads favor. Probably tied to JC's emergence. Just too many INF bodies. In 1st week of season, JC would have been the obvious player down. He's not going ANYwhere, and "can't" do anything with Profar & Garcia. Even on 28-man hard to fit FOUR primarily 2B.
If Mateo doesn't have a major injury, he would be "lurking" eligible to be activated in very early Sept for stretch run / playoffs as that pure speed guy... right after the trade deadline. If JC establishes himself as starter, or at least main platooner, diminishes Profar's role substantially (Garcia's too). He could be a minor trade out near deadline. Or, even more likely, they just "stash" Mateo there all year & get him work at alt site when he's.... healthy again 🙂
