Probably would think differently if they were playing real games in AAA/AA but they are not. Plus we are don’t really know what the coaches at the alternative site are reporting on the readiness of each of the players.

Maybe this causes a bit of reluctance to make moves.

Longer term ... Mateo (if he looks OK in camp) may be the choice. We have seen Olivares cool off ... Naylor not heat up ... France not grabbing 1B/DH ... plus (and this is a bit of a larger concern) Profar who is just not hitting. Yes, he seems to be working counts and not striking out but the production is just not there.

Mateo gives max versatility OF/INF ... combined with Cronenworth (L) could be situationally used all around as needed and Profar is not going away ... a switch hitter who can also serve in the OF/INF.

When Hosmer returns the 1B need is minimized and with the cut to 28 coming ... could see two of Naylor, France, and Olivares optioned.

So when the dust settles, I'd like Mateo to fill Hosmer's spot, then when Hosmer back a RP down, likely Bednar.  Staying at 30 all year would benefit all teams, but Pads relatively more with many out of options guys on active roster.

Hopefully returns near his PHIL level of a few years back ... pre some injuries. Concern is that he had a variety of injuries: back ... right hand nerve ... lat ... right biceps tendinitis .... finger blister all sending him to the IL. Just turned 30 ... so a long shot.

IF he does ... he does have a minor league option plus he is under control for 2021 (maybe 2022 depending on the service time calculation for this year). Could be useful as a long man in the pen or ... if he does rebound ... that 5th SP.

It seems like MLB has to decide pretty soon whether or not to change to active roster rules.  I'm not a fan of the expanded rosters, but 100% get the need for them this year.  My own vote would be delay the move to 28 until when it was supposed to go down to 26, and then just stay at 28 rest of year.

Weirdly, with Hosmer out increasing playing time for ALL of  JC, Naylor, & France; it actually feels more difficult to find a way to get Mateo on the active roster.  FENN, you might be right; just keep him on IL until the need arises?  He's the only non-C position player on the 40 that's not up.

Makes sense given the COVID issues around the league and will create a buffer to avoid having to use some of the non-roster prospect kids not ready for the ML and creating a very bad 40 man roster issue going forward for years.

No issue to add these three and then DFA them ... not really caring if they get claimed although with the 40 man roster room ... they still have minor league options to work through the season if needed.

Mejias-Breen had a consistently good year last year in the PCL and didn't do that badly in his late season add to the Padres' roster.  A lot like France, so if France gets injured or starts to falter badly, he could get the call.  Don't think we'll see the other two unless things get really really bad.
