30-man Active O.D., 40-man MLB, 60-man "Taxi" Rosters
Quote from Randy Manese on August 1, 2020, 9:55 pmOlivares starting to slip and Naylor's getting better hacks. Without Hosmer looks like Naylor in the lineup consistently, especially against RHP. Possibility they bring up Almonte and Torrens and send down Olivares (to regroup) as well as Lucchesi. I'd also send down Bednar and bring up either Baez or Morejon as the new longman/piggyback starter; we can always bring him up if Strahm continues to falter or one of the other RPs gets "overused". Still don't think we need Mateo yet.
These moves are probably too radical for the Padres to make, but need to re-set the pitching and get an experienced bat on the bench with Hosmer out. I think we see Patino before we see Gore and it could come by mid-August if we don't get better production from the current #4 pitching slot. If Quantrill grabs the opportunity and/or Baez and/or Morejon show well, then save Patino for next year.

Quote from fenn68 on August 2, 2020, 6:32 amI do have a bit of a worry about the readiness / upgrade provided by any of the players being called up from the alternative site.
Remember only about a week ago they failed to beat out any of the current 30 man roster and since have only been working out in intra squad games. Long run they may be better but now?
Probably would think differently if they were playing real games in AAA/AA but they are not. Plus we are don’t really know what the coaches at the alternative site are reporting on the readiness of each of the players.
Maybe this causes a bit of reluctance to make moves.

Quote from fenn68 on August 2, 2020, 6:48 amSounding that a pitcher will be added today given the over use of the staff so far .... probably just a short term fix.
Longer term ... Mateo (if he looks OK in camp) may be the choice. We have seen Olivares cool off ... Naylor not heat up ... France not grabbing 1B/DH ... plus (and this is a bit of a larger concern) Profar who is just not hitting. Yes, he seems to be working counts and not striking out but the production is just not there.
Mateo gives max versatility OF/INF ... combined with Cronenworth (L) could be situationally used all around as needed and Profar is not going away ... a switch hitter who can also serve in the OF/INF.
When Hosmer returns the 1B need is minimized and with the cut to 28 coming ... could see two of Naylor, France, and Olivares optioned.

Quote from Brian Connelly on August 2, 2020, 9:42 amI'm pretty sure being in Colorado for just 1 more day before being back home and having used Joey, Cal, AND Perdomo (only 18 pitches) yesterday, they are going to select Jerad Eickhoff. He would fill Cal's role from last night (length out of pen) if neccy. But likely won't get in a close game.
He has an option left, which is important. If he does pitch today, it would likely be a 1 day active roster cameo.
I feel like Mateo's speed alone could potentially help win a close game vs LAD. Would like to see him up in Hosmer's spot. Feels increasingly likely MLB will decide to go to 30-man (or at least 28-man) all year with growing # of doubleheaders that can be projected into "2nd half" of season now; would prevent all the movement of 27th man going up/down for 1 game.
Naylor's importance increases with Hosmer down, as do France & JC. But Olivares isn't going anywhere; he's the 4th OF and really the only other CF option (please don't suggest Myers)...
So when the dust settles, I'd like Mateo to fill Hosmer's spot, then when Hosmer back a RP down, likely Bednar. Staying at 30 all year would benefit all teams, but Pads relatively more with many out of options guys on active roster.

Hopefully returns near his PHIL level of a few years back ... pre some injuries. Concern is that he had a variety of injuries: back ... right hand nerve ... lat ... right biceps tendinitis .... finger blister all sending him to the IL. Just turned 30 ... so a long shot.
IF he does ... he does have a minor league option plus he is under control for 2021 (maybe 2022 depending on the service time calculation for this year). Could be useful as a long man in the pen or ... if he does rebound ... that 5th SP.

Quote from Brian Connelly on August 3, 2020, 12:21 amWith how P's got used the last 2 days, it makes no sense to option Eickhoff until after he does get used. Really "the" long guy in the pen since can't really go to Cal (or Joey) until maybe the 3rd game. But with the upcoming move down to 28 after LAD series, not sure how you use guys; rotate in a fresh arm (like G. Reyes) for just a day or 2 after Eickhoff pitches?
It seems like MLB has to decide pretty soon whether or not to change to active roster rules. I'm not a fan of the expanded rosters, but 100% get the need for them this year. My own vote would be delay the move to 28 until when it was supposed to go down to 26, and then just stay at 28 rest of year.
Weirdly, with Hosmer out increasing playing time for ALL of JC, Naylor, & France; it actually feels more difficult to find a way to get Mateo on the active roster. FENN, you might be right; just keep him on IL until the need arises? He's the only non-C position player on the 40 that's not up.

Quote from fenn68 on August 3, 2020, 6:57 amPadres add LHP Radke, INFs Mejias-Breen and Vosler to the player pool (now up to 57).
Makes sense given the COVID issues around the league and will create a buffer to avoid having to use some of the non-roster prospect kids not ready for the ML and creating a very bad 40 man roster issue going forward for years.
No issue to add these three and then DFA them ... not really caring if they get claimed although with the 40 man roster room ... they still have minor league options to work through the season if needed.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 3, 2020, 7:48 amMejias-Breen had a consistently good year last year in the PCL and didn't do that badly in his late season add to the Padres' roster. A lot like France, so if France gets injured or starts to falter badly, he could get the call. Don't think we'll see the other two unless things get really really bad.

Quote from Brian Connelly on August 3, 2020, 9:30 amWatch Vosler. Really like that add. He was having a great ST I.
I count 58 in pool. Does Wingenter not count against pool now due to being on 45-day IL?
