2026 Padre Season

I would think that either Sears or Hart will be optioned and Canning either gets DFAd or comes down with a phantom injury.

Of the 2, I'm thinking Hart has shown a little more. He's at least got that sweeper that, when he's got it, can put guys away.

I would guess Sears goes down and re-estabishes him self in a starting role ... that is one.

Baring the phantom injury ... might opt for optioning Rodriguez to hold onto all the options for the stretch run. Vasquez, Canning, nor Marquez can be optioned ... one will be #5 starter and a second the piggyback / long man. Can they vision for August the third option being an effective 6th/7th inning arm as useful as Rodriguez? Rodriguez gets a bit more rest / recovery and maybe more closer role chances in EP.

Somehow we will have to make another shuffle when (if) Pivetta, Musgrove, and Adam return at the end of the month. (don't think we see Giolito again and Morgan will be an as needed call-up). Will be more challenging at that point on who gets DFA (if no new injury).

With Mize, King, Ray, along with Buehler should wield a successful August. Then hopefully Pivetta and Musgrove return in early September and really turn our rotation into something special.

A rotation of Mize, King, Ray, Pivetta, and Musgrove could really help separate SD from the other Wild Card contenders.

Just need the offense to stay hot.

That would be GREAT, Booster.

Pivetta and Musgrove returning, and on form, would be a MASSIVE boost to our middle relief core. I'd much rather those 2 get innings than guys like Hart, Marquez, Sears, etc.

With the announcement that the Padres sale has just been confirmed, I look forward to the new owners making an immediate impact.  I would move forward with signing several of our impending free agents for next year.  This would stabilize the team for 2027 and, because of the impending lock-out/CBA stand-off, won't cost them the full salaries of the players they re-sign at least for the first year.

My priority, particularly because it might be surprisingly easy if you do it now, is to re-sign Morejon.  He wants to stay and he knows the Padres value him.  I'd give him a split contract with a bigger salary bump if he is willing and able to convert to a SP; if he fails or it threatens his arm health (which had been a recurring problem earlier in his career), then he would fall back to possibly being the best LH RP who is not currently a closer in MLB.

Next priority is to sound out who among all the possible SPs that can leave after the 2026 would be willing to stay with the Padres.  Because of age and past performance/injury I'd focus on keeping Mize and King, hoping we can get Musgrove back for a lower spot in the rotation in 2027 in is last contract year and then hoping on one or more of the remaining SP arms (Buehler/Pivetta/Giolito/Marquez/Canning/Vasquez) to fill out the rotation in light of Morejon and possibly Morgan converting to SP and moving into the rotation.   Early movement to sign might be a little cheaper than free agency competition after the new CBA is signed, although more team financial parameters will be known then.  King, I think, also is leaning on staying with the Padres and the tweak in his contract may not be that much - more like years vice additional salary.

Lastly, I would definitely bring back Laureano.  Should be relatively cheap and I think he wants to stay here.  He brings a lot of grit and a competitive edge I like to see on this team.  would solidify the OF since we have no prospects who are ready to take over that LF position any time soon.

That's my wish list for the new owners.  Let's see what really happens between now and the end of the season.

Actually the approval was just the sub-committee ... the full owner approval is scheduled for next week with it becoming official the week of Aug 17.

Not sure we see anything major immediately from the new owners. I might wait until I get a better understanding of the current front office and their plans. Plus, the new owners may not want to be the everyday involved types ... so have to be comfortable with the incumbents OR insert their own controlling owner / front office head who would set the tone. Making a long term investment ... so no hurry to make knee jerk moves.

Not sure any motivation to open the checkbook ... immediately ... to the current players without a full evaluation of other options and without knowing the new CBA rules. Keep in mind almost under any scenario the payroll will go up in 2027 without re-signing FA to be and without improving the team (probably lesser team).

Robbie Ray looking like Casey Mize looking like Griffin Canning looking like German Marquez looking like

The Miz pitched today …….so at least we miss him in the upcoming series.

Here is some good news:

The Padres sent Joe Musgrove on a rehab assignment to the El Paso Chihuahuas. He could return August 21 when the Padres are at home.

So, when he comes back, who is the odd man out? Right now it is King, Vasquez, Mize, Buehler and Ray. It will likely be Vasquez or Buehler. Vasquez is making a statement. He has had outstanding back-to-back starts.

Canning

Move Vasquez back to Pen

I think everyone trusts Vasquez more than Canning at this point
