Are you okay Mr P ?
No way I would want Verdugo on this team over Sheets, Joe, Gonzalez etc
Read it again…was about Heyward.
I wouldn’t take Verdugo over those guys either.

Quote from MrPadre19 on March 20, 2025, 8:17 amAnd one of the reasons I’d take Verdugo over Hayward is Heyward is at the end of his career and won’t get “better” at this point.
Verdugo at least has a chance that the right situation could make him better.
One’s 28 and the other 35

Quote from Jeremy Hill on March 20, 2025, 10:36 amI try not to put too much stock in spring training numbers good or bad. Having said that I think Heyward is washed. He's been pretty bad 3 out of the last 4 years. Still, just based on the fact that he signed a major league deal and has a past relationship with Shildt I expect he'll get at least a month's worth of ABs to see if he can produce.
If they go with a 13/13 split I think Iglesias and Sheets get the last 2 bench spots. They could go 14/12 to start the year if they want to keep someone else rostered. I think Wade is a guy they could DFA and still keep. The same could be true for Gonzalez who might view this as a good situation to be in to make it back to the big leagues eventually. Tirso has an option left. I expect he'll start in the minors. He could be an early call up if Heyward or Sheets struggle. Eguy would be the one you might worry about losing.
Verdugo is coming off a bad season, has missed all of spring training and I've seen some reports that he's not a great clubhouse guy. That's enough to make him a pass for me. I think there's a reason his market has been so cold.

Sheets also has an option left so there is some wiggle room for the 26

Quote from fenn68 on March 20, 2025, 4:51 pmIglesias and Gurriel have opt out on Saturday (no idea if they exercise them if not on the 26 man) ... so while considering that the Padres have a full 40 man so before adding them they need t0 determine the offsetting move(s).
A DFA of Sullivan seems likely. Not sure why they have not returned Rule 5 Nunez (however with the RP injuries and if they start with 13 pitchers he may be the clean-up guy).
Without options, Rosario and Wade will have to be dropped if not on the 26 man .. opening up additional slots.
Preller may still be trying to make even minor deals for Rosario, Sullivan, and Wade and that may be delaying any call on adds. Padres usually wait until the last moment on these things.
So, no real issue on the 40 man for adds ... just the 26 man. Iglesias "seems" like a lock ... so the 5 man bench: Diaz; Joe; Sheets (L); Iglesias; plus 1 out of Lockridge, Rosario, Wade, Gonzales, Gurriel. I would go with Lockridge (PR speed, OF defense). Sheets gets LHH DH (about 75% of starts). History shows that few want either Sheets or Hayward up against LHP ... so that is where Joe and Iglesias come in ... maybe Lockridge.
Clearly someone with a good ST is getting left out.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on March 20, 2025, 5:08 pmI think we're getting a preview of what the regular lineup will be to start the year tonight.
- Arraez
- Tatis
- Merrill
- Machado
- Cronenworth
- Bogaerts
- Sheets
- Heyward
- Diaz
Campusano, Joe, and Iglesias all seem like pretty safe bets. I would probably go with Rosario for the last spot, but you could make a case for a few guys.

Quote from ultratvfan on March 20, 2025, 6:21 pmDavid Peralta is the only Padres FA still unsigned by a team. RHP Carl Edwards Jr. signed signed with the Tigres de Quintana Roo of the Mexican League.
Will AJP bring back Peralta and should he?

Julio did something way worse that Trevor Bauer and Trevor has been blacklisted. Just saying.
