2025 Draft

PreviousPage 6 of 7Next

Did see a nice article on 7th round pick Kerrington Cross ... 5th year SR out of Cincinnati ... 3B ... already 23. He was the BIG12 player of the year with some good hitting performance.

Being 23 and a 5th year College SR just makes teams shy away for using a high pick so maybe the Padres end up with some upside for a 7th round pick. He has little bargaining power so expect a very low signing bonus.

What made him interesting ... beyond the on field stats ... is a combo of his "baseball rat persona" while gaining an engineering degree and working full time. The man seems focused on success and works to achieve it.

Hope he makes the big leagues but seems to be at the very least a top system prospect that is good for the organization and other prospects.

Drafted players need to be signed by Monday July 28th ... not really a concern and the Padres tend to make an announcement en masse rather than trickle them out as they sign.

Side note: players with no college eligibility remaining have until the next draft to sign technically but if they are part of the Top 10 subject to the pool they need to sign (under slot hopefully) for the Padres to use the under slot money on over slot signings. Don't sign ... allocation for that pick is withdrawn.

Are the Padres holding an orientation camp for the draftees in August? AZ or SD? Expect to see some (most?) in the Fall instructs.

Schoolcraft signs at allocation:

25. Padres: Kruz Schoolcraft, LHP, Sunset HS (OR)
Pick value: $3,606,600
Signing bonus: $3,606,600

Padres also sign 5 picks .... rounds 5 - 10 all College SR ... at a combined $1.030MM UNDER slot and with Schoolcraft on slot ... that leaves a lot of money available for picks in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th rounds plus he HS pick in the 11th.

$60K total for the 5 draft picks, ranging from 5K for #9 RHP Will Koger to 20K for #7 3b Kerrington Cross, who was assigned to the Arizona Complex league roster but will not play because today is the last day of their season.  Hoping we can get those two HS catchers, but with Schoolcraft in the fold figure it is already a successful draft for me.

Schoolcraft coming in on slot was a surprise to me ... thought buying him out of his College commitment would require an over slot.

Now that they are about $1MM under the allocations ... still find it hard to imagine the remaining unsigned requiring that much considering where they were drafted vs their rankings for the draft. The two HS catchers should get above slot some I guess.

Probably over thinking this but money is money so could it have been a consideration by the organization to strategically select players in a way to end up under allocation ... not spend that cash ... shift some of the budgeted spend to add for this trade deadline. Like it or not ... cash seems a major hurdle at this point (as it was over the winter when the signed all those low end FA) ... so even an extra $1MM+/- might be a big thing. Maybe?

Looks like Padres got everyone to sign, including the two young catchers!  Go Padres!

I really was wrong on the signing bonus for the two HS catchers.

Harvey got $1.5MM (slot a $427K)

Madonna got $656K (no slot but max of $150K before excess counts against the allocation).

So appears to suggest the Padres will spend all the allocation and pay the penalty for going over at the first level (just a penalty of a % of the excess).

Glad to see the front office get everyone signed in the draft class.  I like the big lefty Schoolcraft, signing for slot value to go along with our other big lefties from last year in Mayfield and Bateman.  On the MLB network draft show, they commented that Schoolcraft could pan out as one of the top players in the entire draft.

I'll be watching to see how the HS catchers pan out.   The front office must really believe in Harvey, since he signed for roughly $1.075 over slot value.  Madonna signed for roughly 650K (so approximately 500K will count against the Padres pool for this draft).  The Pads continued to scout Madonna and liked the hit stick in the wood bat draft league that happened after his high school season.

3rd rounder, toolsy OF Wideman signed for roughly $125K under slot value.

4th rounder RHP  Salina's signed at slot value, $571.5K, which is surprising considering he underwent TJ surgery earlier this spring, but the front office loved his mental makeup.

In rounds 6-10 the Pads saved the money necessary for Harvey and Madonna, by drafting college seniors that have no signing leverage because they have exhausted their college eligibility.

7th rounder 3B Cross got the most at $20K, then 10th rounder SS DeCriscio got $15 K, 6th & 8th round P Dalena & Hitt both got $10K, and 9th round P Koger got $5K.  That represented a savings of approximately $1,130,000, of which almost all went to Harvey.

I believe the penalty for going over approximately 5 (or 10)% is minimal, plus the savings on Wideman & hopefully Salina, which is what allowed them to sign Madonna.

Did see a note that the Padres will (might) pair both HS C in the development process ... sharing catching duties and exploring other positions (1B, OF, DH) to max development of the bats while not over using they at a young age behind the plate.

Going all out on two HS C ... might be a reflection of the major shortage of good C in both MiL and ML ball these days. Catchers out of the draft seem to be always high risk in developing, so why not shape the draft to land them (over pay?) and  go low on the other picks (after the 1st two rounds the odds are really high anyway to land a ML impact player).
