2025 Draft

PreviousPage 4 of 7Next

Maybe in reality a small issue but when does the clock start on a draftee? ... he has to sign in a few weeks but probably will not be on any minor league roster until mid-next season (if then) before just rehabbing. Being a college player think control is 4 years before has to be rostered or to Rule 5.

Given he will not be getting any real development time this year or most of next ... that shrinks the time to get him evaluated as to a roster add. Is there a special delay in the start for these types of situations?

6th round Jaxon Dalena ... College SR RHP out of a smaller school. Not ranked on the Pipeline.

Not ranked ... College SR ... sure sounds like an under slot ($331K) pick.

This may start a string of under slots either to sign Schoolcraft over slot or maybe Harvey the HS C in the 5th round. Maybe a nest egg to hit some over slot signing after Round 10 ... Padre usually target a few in that way.

The 6th & 7th round picks of RHP Dalena & RH 3B Cross are both 5th year seniors and definite under slot picks.  Don't most 5th years seniors sign for $10,000 signing bonus?  If so, that would represent a savings of approximately $570,000 to spend on over slot players.  Same with 8th round pick LHP Hitt.  Potential savings up to $750,000.

4th round pick ... Michael Salina RHP, College.

TJ surgery this spring ... so out until late next year. When he was healthy ... big FB pushing the 100 MPH.

Seems like another Preller upside gamble and another potential under slot signing. Would seem beneficial for the kid to sign and get his rehab work done under experience professional guidance vs sitting out a year and try to rebuild his draft value ... maybe in in 2 years?

More on Salina, MLB Pipeline ranked #210

Video scouting report »

Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 45 | Control: 45 | Overall: 40

He spent his sophomore year in the rotation and was off to a solid start as the Bonnies’ No. 1 starter this year when an elbow injury shelved him after four starts; he had Tommy John surgery in April.

A 6-foot-1 right-hander, Salina has electric stuff when he’s healthy. He’s gained some ticks of velocity in his fastball from earlier in his college career and was averaging close to 95 mph with it, while touching 98 routinely and topping out at 102. The pitch misses bats thanks to excellent extension. So does his mid-80s slider, which is short and hard with two-plane break. He doesn’t go to his changeup often, but he has feel for the upper-80s.

While he’s strong and compact, Salina is a sneaky good athlete and does a decent job of repeating his simple, from-the-stretch delivery. He found the zone a lot in his first four starts and now teams will have to decide if they want to take him and let him rehab in their system.

5th round pick Ty Harvey RH Catcher ranked #153 by MLB Pipeline.

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 55 | Run: 40 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 40

Harvey is another tall, strong prep backstop who, has excited Florida scouts about his all-around abilities in a class not deep in catching.

Strong and powerful, Harvey has shown off some excellent offensive skills in high school and on the summer showcase circuit. He has tremendous raw power that he's shown he can get to in games. While he’s power-over-hit, there’s a split camp over just how big the disparity is. Some have seen a player with an excellent approach who can drive the ball the other way, while others have seen him pull the ball hard but struggle with pitches down in the zone because of a stiff setup. He doesn’t swing-and-miss much, which does bode well for him getting to his power in the future.

Harvey has every chance to stick behind the plate, with good hands and solid receiving skills. He moves well, especially for his size. He has excellent arm strength but might need to clean up his throwing mechanics to get to all of it consistently. The fact he’ll be 19 at the time of the Draft might bounce him from some team models.

So, 6-7-8 are College SR ... not ranked by Pipeline ... now clearly looking as thought they are creating some significant under slot pool for someone(s).

These picks are always unknowns but it sure seems like they are unknown to a different level this year.

8th round pick Will Koger has a "career" ERA of 8.1

A "career" WHIP of 1.92

62 K's

49 BB's

I get these kids are using aluminum bats....but yikes.

On the flip side our 7th round pick Kerrington Cross was the Big 12 player of the year and a Golden Spikes semifinalist. Even as a 5th year senior you would think that would make him more coveted. This part of the draft is always interesting.

Just seems strange a guy worth drafting has an ERA over 8 in College.

I've been googling all of our picks to see if I can find a little bit about all of them. From what I found he was a top 100-150 guy coming out of highschool and he can run his fastball up into the high 90s. A little something to dream on for a guy who's probably going to sign for 10K.
