2025-26 Offseason thread
Quote from MrPadre19 on October 13, 2025, 12:42 pmI wouldn't be surprised if Schildt is managing again as soon as next season or in '27.
He said he was "retiring as the PADRES Manager".
Something's going on internally IMO.
Analytics maybe?
Preller maybe?
He's only 57 and has been successful in every season he's managed.
He will be a popular candidate until he gets his next gig.
We need a younger guy who can handle all the analytics which affect roster construction and more importantly the lineup construction/pitching changes.....the Ol' Righty/Lefty thing.
I think Shildt made too much out of it sometimes completely ignoring the players reverse splits etc.
I don't think it was "the grind" at all

Quote from fenn68 on October 13, 2025, 2:36 pmListen to T.Gwynn, Jr relating his discussion with Shildt last night (before the announcement) and he is convinced that Shildt is just burned out ... wants out of the grind of managing and was willing to leave 2 years of money on the table with the retirement.
He suggested that Shildt does not want to return to managing. Of course time sometimes alters a course but for now it is all his call.

Quote from fenn68 on October 13, 2025, 2:46 pmAnother name that came up for considerations by a couple of media folks ... Scott Servais ... former manager of SEATTLE (8 years ... good overall record) and is currently working in the Padres' front office (Player Development) ... similar to Shildt's Padre role prior to getting the Manager role.
Service worked with Preller in Texas and in player development with the LAA prior to his Seattle run.
If you want a manager with experience, an apparent good working relationship with Preller, and some consistency with organization philosophy ... have to give Servais a long look.
Padres have a returning team that is poised to continue its playoff run ... some continuity may be of better value than injecting the unknown of a "new voice".

Quote from WindsorUK on October 13, 2025, 7:29 pmGood list.
Name that intrigues the most is Pujols, if for no other reason than HE would be the BIG DOG in the clubhouse.
Who will replace Mike Shildt as Padres manager? Start with these 11 candidates
Good list.

Quote from ultratvfan on October 13, 2025, 7:48 pmWow. That was a surprise.
Now, who will replace him.
There are only two managers in franchise history that took the Padres to the World Series: Dick Williams in 1984 and Bruce Bochy in 1998. Bochy left the Rangers and will not be back. Could he be a possibility?
I still like the idea of Padres legend Terry Kennedy at the helm. He is younger than Bochy, who was his back up catcher.

Quote from fenn68 on October 14, 2025, 9:09 amPadres are (should be) a coveted landing spot for a top managerial candidate given the returning core and the past two seasons of playoffs.
However, there MAY BE some other considerations in a managerial selection on both sides (Padres and candidates).
- Padres ownership is a bit uncertain with an ongoing lawsuit ... outcome may change the approach to operations ... John Siedler could handle that unknown in ways we don't expect
- As I recall, John Siedler was not going to be the controlling partner long term under the current thinking
- Preller's contract is over after 2026 ... will he be retained? If not, will the new GM want his own managerial choice to fit the new GM's philosophy and someone he is comfortable working with?
- Although the returning core is good ... key players are FA and what is the commitment to replace them ... if the budget is limited going forward ... do you want to take a sinking ship if another team on the upswing is making an offer (especially if more money).
- With the expected lockout in 2027 ... does the team want to commit to a long term contract (given the above) and does a candidate want a one year deal with no certainty going forward (if alternatives).
With eight open jobs ... top candidates can juggle a lot of considerations and take what is best for them ... money plus a probability of a long term run as manager in an environment (GM/owners) he is comfortable with. Looking forward the Padres may not be the best alternative.

Quote from fenn68 on October 14, 2025, 11:41 amPreller had a presser this morning ... most on the managerial situation (nothing unexpected).
However, some other comments that will lead to fan speculation (he of course was not clear on any moves):
- in the next few days he will be speaking with various players ... one will be Darvish ... left open was Darvish's status suggesting Darvish is mulling his future (per earlier discussions) ... to be clear did NOT suggest any of Darvish's thinking.
- Coming discussions with Miller and Morejon will address on options on their roles (potentially) in 2026 ... much is dependent on other off season moves and what Suarez does. Door was open for Miller to start and Morejon to assume a regular end of game role. He did note that the Padres have been successful in converting RP to SP ... King, Lugo.
- Campusano will get his shot next season.
- He is confident in the RP and the core line-up going forward and indicted SP is the priority ... Pivetta - Musgrove then address the rest. Obviously no commitment on whether he will or will not pursue King, Cease, or anyone else.

Quote from MrPadre19 on October 14, 2025, 11:53 amPretty much gonna have to extend AJ Preller now.
What Manager would want to come in under Preller with only one year guaranteed?
Either they let AJ go now (hope they don't) and let the "new guy" hire the Mgr or need to extend AJ first.

Quote from BoosterSD on October 14, 2025, 1:18 pmOutside of Manager, Darvish has to be the biggest question facing the team.
IF he retires it does create a hole in the starting rotation, how big of a hole is not known as it is unknown if health will allow him to return the high end Darvish that we could count on being close to the top of the rotation. If he his returns is closer to the 2025 performance, then its a lot of money for a 3 month #4 or #5 SP.
If he does retire, then SD has some additional dollars to use towards the rotation. His AAV towards the CBT level is $18M per season, and the cash money is $16M for 2026 and $15M per season in 2027 and 2028. Both per Spotrac.com.
Of course replacing Darvish with King for about the same AAV would be a nice upgrade performance wise as long as King is healthy moving forward.
King, Pivetta, Musgrove, Vasquez is a nice start to a starting rotation.

Quote from WindsorUK on October 14, 2025, 3:48 pmAdd Miller to that group Booster and you've got your 5 man rotation.
Adam, Moerjon, Estrada, Morgan, Peralta, Reynolds, Matsui, and maybe even Hart in the bullpen.
Sears, Waldron, Hoeing, and Britto are in line for the number 5 spot in the rotation as well.
If an SP is available that Niebla can work with, then definitely bring him in.
Otherwise, we need bats! Scoring 2 runs or less in a third of your games( I counted 56?) ......it doesn't matter how good your pitchers are.
