2024 Padres Season

Quote from fenn68 on September 1, 2024, 9:17 amOK flurry of SEP 1 moves (not sure the logic / timing on some):
Diaz (non-roster) added as extra postion player … Bachar DFA to keep the 40 man
Peralta added … as extra pitcher
Cosgrove added … Vasquez optioned
Kolek to 60 day IL to make room on the 40 man for the add of Lockridge (OF) who was optioned to EP.
————————-
bit surprised Bachar was DFA … a decent RP … over someone such as Azocar who seems well out of favor. Good chance Bachar is claimed.
The timing of adding (and optioning) Lockridge must have to do with making him eligible for the playoffs in case of injury. Speedy, good defense CF but not much of a hitter … sort of a Johnson 2.0. Insurance / depth move? He would have been Rule 5 eligible this winter I believe.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on September 1, 2024, 10:31 amFangraphs has Lockridge with 80 grade speed and a 60/70 glove. Maybe they think he can be a Terrence Gore type in the playoffs. He could pinch run and maybe replace Profar on defense late in games. That could be more valuable than what other candidates might bring off the bench in a playoff setting.

Does give the options … but with Tatis and Kim returning and going back to 13 position players … not sure who will be left to remove from the active roster … 3 of the current set already have to be dropped, so a 4th?
Likely the first three off … McCoy, Campusano, and either Johnson or Wade. So the 4th would likely be Johnson or Wade for Lockridge who has zero ML experience then push him into a critical playoff spot.

Quote from fenn68 on September 1, 2024, 11:41 amPadres sign veteran SS Nick Ahmed to a minor league deal … sent to the ACL (for now).
More playoff insurance. Maybe more worried about Kim than we think? Maybe, like Diaz, a mid-Sep add for a legit ML back-up at SS for the playoffs (over McCoy / Wade).
Interesting move.
Note he was signed on Aug 31 … so is eligible for post-season play.

Quote from fenn68 on September 1, 2024, 4:58 pmPadres have 23 games to play … LAD, AZ, and NYM have 25 … ATL has 26. That is not a lot to make up (or lose) position but it can happen. SD just needs to keep winning to ensure a Wild Card slot.
I pretty much discount catching the LAD … Padres with 61 losses are 6 losses behind the LAD who have the best record in MLB and continue to win. Focus in on AZ, ATL, and NYM losing. AZ has 1 less loss than SD while ATL has 1 more loss … all sitting in WC slots. The concern is a hot NYM who are only 3 losses greater than SD … and that is in striking distance and should cause some concern. Padres of course need to win but one of AZ, ATL, or NYM needs to struggle … don’t care who.
One small plus is that since the other teams have more games to play … more chances to add on to their loss total … good for SD.

The Mets have to plays PHI twice, ATL and MIL, those are 13 really tough games, If the Padres go 12-11, they would have to go 17-8 to catch them up.

Quote from Randy Manese on September 2, 2024, 10:38 amGlad the 18 straight game stretch comes to an end tonight with, hopefully, the Padres on the winning side of that number - worse they can do is 9-9. Despite starting off that stretch with losing the series against the Rockies, they won series against the Twins and Rays and split series against the Mets and Cardinals - these latter 4 teams were not pushovers. You can see the impact on the players, particularly the pitching staff. After his no-hitter, Cease has been inefficient and inconsistent, now sporting some of his worst stats of the season in FIP, K-BB%, WHIP, ERA, H/9 and BB/9 innings. He definitely needs a blow as does Suarez, who despite picking up saves, has struggled to get them. The addition of Darvish and the continued return to normal of Musgrove will greatly impact of staff as these guys tend to go longer (when healthy) than Vasquez, Waldron or even Perez. More fresh arms in the bullpen will also help give Suarez more time off, especially, if we can clinch a wild card spot relatively early in the month.
For the position players, Profar has fallen back with the challenge of the schedule and some of the others look like they need time off their feet, like Bogaerts, Machado and Cronenworth; in fact, Merrill could use an off day to keep him from burning out. Be glad when we get Tatis and Kim back in the line-up to energize that group and give us some more speed on the base paths plus what each is capable of doing defensively; further, I think Diaz will help more than we probably expect with the catching chores down the line - not bad to have your #3 catcher as a former recent All-star and did you know that the Padres can put 8 position players in the field that were All-Stars?

Quote from MrPadre19 on September 5, 2024, 6:21 amWhile we’re agonizing over the fact that the Mets and D-backs just won’t lose you gotta believe they’re doing the same thing watching us.
We don’t “need” the Mets to lose….we can just keep winning.Mets and Braves have a 3 game series in the last week of the season.
Could be very interesting.
