Wonder the level of marketing saturation they will run in Japan ... which they may now "own" for baseball. Will any other MLB team even be able to effectively market in Japan?

Just came back from Tokyo.
It's in all the train cars, platforms, road signs.
Dodgers have taken Japan.

Quote from fenn68 on January 21, 2025, 4:39 pmThink the LAD situation should alter how the Padres build their 2025 roster with using their resources to build the best "playoff roster" with a 162 game roster that can just get into the playoffs. Small needle to thread but given limited resources a path to take.
What does a team need to be successful in the playoffs ... three quality SP (Cease, King, Darvish) ... a strong deep bullpen (Padres seem OK there) ... and some "game changing hitter" (Machado, Tatis, Merrill, Arraez) with "decent" support (Cronenworth). And usually a surprise contribution from an unknown (Padres have a lot of unknowns). So, not in bad shape IF they get into the playoffs.
Is this team good enough to get that last Wild Card slot? If we give the three Division winners to the NYM, CUBS, LAD ... are there three teams that will end up with a better record than SD? How much (if anything) do the Padres have to do to have land one of those slots? Can they patch the holes with serviceable do no harm journeymen (e.g types like Solano, D.Peralta, Ahmed for 2025)? Can they wait to the trade deadline to seek out that "final piece"?
As much as the LAD, NYM, and PHIL have spent to create very strong teams in the NL ... at least two will fail to get to the WS and in a short series with the unknown of injuries ... the other playoff teams in short series can prevail if they are built for the playoffs. There is hope.

Quote from Alex Tamayo on January 21, 2025, 7:52 pmI think sometimes we forget we don't play the bums 162 times, when in reality we could be 0-13 against them and still make the playoffs, and then as usual, anything can happen.

MLB probably wont let SD defer money, that is only for the rich clubs!! 😉

At some point Preller has to make the call on Profar ... some other team is going to make a compelling offer and Profar ... for his family ... has to accept. That fork in the road may come sooner than later post Santander's signing and ST arriving. Profar is the last quality LF standing.
I wonder if Preller and Profar are close on an agreement structure BUT Preller has to clear payroll space first ... that might be a trade of Arraez.
Padres are $2MM over the CBT ... trade Arraez (1 year, $14MM) and sign Profar (3 years, $10MM AAV but back loaded) could help both CBT and Cash 2025. Profar could go to LF or 1B. Overall is that a potential upgrade over Arraez with the advantage of 3 years control.
At that point, one position that may be available in FA/trade cheaply is 1B/DH at the upgrade level since teams are seemingly having a lower interest in some of the one dimensional types. Some made a suggestion on a trade for Torkelson (who is apparently available) ... has not developed as hoped, bad defense at 1B, but can hit LHP and most importantly low cost. There are other similar low cost options.
