2024-25 Offseason Talk
Quote from ultratvfan on January 13, 2025, 11:50 amQuote from fenn68 on January 13, 2025, 11:29 amSasaki's camp has said he will not announce a decision of the 15th ... so the tension will drag on.
Mets and Giants have said they have been told they are out of the running.
Padres and Dodgers have told other international FA that they are free to talk to other teams (or hold off until 2026) ... suggesting they both believe they are finalists.
The Yankees are out.

Sounds like a good thing. Let's hope he is leaning towards to signing with the Padres
Rangers are also out.

Quote from fenn68 on January 13, 2025, 2:09 pmDonavan Solano signs with the Mariners for $3.5MM ... a lot more than I expected for a 37 year old bench piece that the Padres signed as a minor league FA last season. Good for him.
As it stands his role looks to be going to either Eguy Rosario (out of options) or Brosseau (non-roster minor league FA).

Quote from Randy Manese on January 13, 2025, 3:20 pmPadres gave him a chance and he ran with it. A great addition last year and wish him the best in Seattle!
I think Eguy will be given every chance to win the spot on the bench, since he has a lot of position versatility, can steal bases and punishes LH pitchers. Also, believe he has better range and arm as a middle infielder than Brosseau, who has played mostly 1b and a little 3b in the past few years.

Agree ... may begin the season with Rosario and if he falters ... make Brosseau a call-up.
Depending on additional moves before the season ... could opt to keep both with Wade focusing on the OF bench along with Lockridge. For now, Padres have only 12 position players on the 40 man and need 13 on the opening day 26 man roster ... so someone has to make it.
Don't really see another INF internally and OF non-roster seems to be only Perlaza and Gonzales ... neither one a slam dunk to be better than Brosseau.
Just guessing that in the end, the bench will be initially populated with league minimum types ... see how the season unfolds and, if necessary, make a mid-season move for an upgrade.

Let's hope Roki wants to be the man, not 3rd fiddle (after Ohtani & Yamamoto) plus enjoys learning from Darvish & Niebla, who has successfully developed two low inning pitchers, Seth Lugo & Michael King into frontline starters the past two seasons and Roki will have to follow a similar path this year. Plus I hope he wants to play in front of our electric sold-out home games and wants the challenge of helping to lead the Pads to their first World Series title!
