Assumes no injuries BUT a good chance
1. Pomeranz out Lopez in

2. Honeywell out Wilson in

My 13 position players are the same as both of yours.  Only substitutes I have from Fenn's pitching staff is Lopez for Hill and Wilson for Honeywell.

Padres have potentially 3 LH RPs better than Hill - Lopez, Castillo and Cosgrove.  Since the latter two have options, they'll try Lopez first.  Likely trade Hill for lower level prospect or International Bonus Money - won't get too much for him but a contending team with a really bad bullpen will take a chance on him.

Morejon beats out Groome but it's closer than many anticipated.  Groome, Honeywell, Avila and Knehr are all in competition for the long relief/spot starter role and could move up if Crismatt is traded - all have options except Honeywell, but he's likely to make it through waivers to El Paso.  See very slim chance for Baez or Kerr and zero chance for Felipe or Weathers to make the opening day roster.

Of course, we know Preller will not be sitting on his hands prior to opening day.  Barring injuries, it's an entertaining team to watch especially when Tatis comes back in April.  I'll miss that since I'll be in Texas to see the San Antonio Missions and El Paso Chihuahuas during the week of last week of April.  Probably not many top prospects there but completes my visits to all the Padres' minor league teams I started last year.

Position Players:

Nola

Cronenworth

Kim

Machado

Bogaerts

Soto

Grisham

Engel

Carpenter

Cruz

Campusano

Darvish

Crismat

Hader

Morejon and Wilson to the minors. Extra arm one less bench piece with 2nd off day not until April 25. Don’t think they will be able to sneak Honeywell past waivers as arm too good.

Don't think the are going to allow more than 13 pitchers on the staff from the beginning of the year this year like they did last year.  Have to go 13 pitchers/13 position players.

13/13 is how I believe it will start.

Honeywell should be interesting in ST … if healthy his upside is way too good clear waivers … probably even if “limited” in ST work. Teams with a bad staff will claim him and have the ML room to see what he has … they always can put him back on waivers if that does n0t work out.

Not sure how good Honeywell has to be in ST games (and on the sidelines) to have the Padres take that extended look into the season. Then they to could DFA him later if needed.

He also could set up a domino effect if good and Wilson is good in ST … Garcia (FA after the season) could draw better trade interest and be moved to save some payroll space and yield a minor prospect. That would still leave Filipe, Baez, Avila, Knehr on the 40 man as RHRP back-up in AAA plus Teheran, M.Lugo as non-roster options for RHRP.

Sort of down the same rabbit hole with Lopez. He will have to look good in ST to unseat Hill and keep Castillo from moving up.

Think his best shot is either injury or trade of Pomeranz (both scenarios are possible).

However, if he does look as though he has upside, Padres may try to make a deal with his former team to keep him and option him to AAA … not sure on the protocol but think all the other teams have to pass on him as a Rule 5 player before a deal. Who knows what changed between the Rule 5 draft and the end of ST … but his team let him exposed and Padres were well down the claiming list so most teams already passed (or took someone else).

On a contender, going to be hard to keep a Rule 5 with no options unless he is lights out in ST.

With Lopez (and Honeywell) wonder if the timing of returning Lopez or DFA Honeywell will make a difference as to other teams claiming them? Once the 26 man is set … usually harder to bump someone for an out of option “prospect”. So maybe a down to the wire call or maybe they make the 26 man with the Padres and action is taken later in April/May.

The Padres are short on arms. They are going to need to keep as many of the available arms as possible. This is bad news for any pitcher who still has options. So...

Obviously when Tatis comes off suspension he will replace Dixon, at least at this point. I also don't see Wilson or Groome making the team out of spring training. They both can and will be optioned to the minors. I see Hill and Honeywell taking the last 2 pitching slots if Honeywell shows any promise at all. Baez, Morejon, Castillo, Cosgrove, Groome, Avila and Knehr all have options. I expect the Padres use those options instead of losing pitchers like Hill, Lopez and Honeywell. Keep them as depth for the season. We are going to need it.

Starters- Darvish, Snell, Musgrove, Martinez, Lugo

Bullpen- Hader, Suarez, Garcia, Pomeranz, Hill, Wilson, Morejon, Crismatt

Catchers- Campusano, Nola

Infielders- Machado, Bogaerts, Cronenworth, Kim, Carpenter, Dixon

Outfielders- Soto, Grisham, Engel, Azocar

DH- Cruz

If no other moves are made and everyone stays healthy the team feels fairly set. It looks like we all pretty much see it the same way. It's really just the last spot or 2 in the bullpen and on the bench that should see a real competition.
