2023 Postseason

I don't think we need individual series threads, but I figured we could use a thread to talk about the playoffs. All 4 matchups going 2-0 was a surprise. I think the Rays were the biggest disappointment. The Rangers offense is already really good. Evan Carter is off to a great start to his career. With Wyatt Langford still on the way they could be scary good.

Agree on Texas ... their offense was young and impressive before Carter arrived (#1 prospect for them) and Langford really looks like the real deal coming soon and not sure where he fits in given their current line-up is stacked. If their pitching holds up ... might go a long way ... but their RP depth is suspect and may be their weak link.

This winter they may be open to a deal of a good prospect for a ML RP (Suarez, Barlow? ... save some payroll and maybe fill a different need).

Good to see Kershaw continuing his status as the worst pitcher in post season history. Man, outside of 1 or 2 games in the pandemic season, he has been horrible in the post season. Glad to see it.

Expect to hear the call for reformatting the playoffs after 3 of the 4 teams that had earned the “bye” and had the off time … lost. Actually hear “complaining” about the five game Division series being too short and not allowing enough games to the better team (over the season) to establish their dominance if they lose that 1st game and are forced to win 3 of 4.

Doubt they can do much without expansion (going to 8 playoff teams per league with no byes) or reducing the playoff teams to 4 per league (which will not happen because of the appeal to the fans getting tot he last wild card and, of course, money). Plus, if they want to go to 7 game series … may need to reduce the games in the season and end it a week +/- earlier.

I am sympathetic to the complaints even though as a fan get to see more baseball that is an elimination format and usually get to root for the underdog with a chance of being gratified in a short series. Build the best team over 162 games (often by a lot) and no one will care or remember as the only thing that is remembered is the World Series winner.

Given that reality … a risk but maybe building a team for the playoffs (eg 3 dominant SP vs 5 very good SP) should be the priority … and bet can make the playoffs with weaker #4 and #5. Would make the case for the Padres this winter to pursue Yamamoto or Snell and pass on at lest 2 of Wacha, Lugo, and Martinez.

Anyone fancy betting AGAINST Bochy?

Looks like the Rangers are on course for at least a berth in AL championship.

I would love to see a standard 8 team bracket for both the NL and AL with zero byes but that defeats the purpose of winning your division and getting a breather.

1st round

1 vs 8 , 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6, 4 vs 5 … best of 3

2nd round…best of 5…division series NLDS

3rd round… best of 7  NLCS

4th round…best of 7…World Series

Bracket would have 1,4,5 and 8 seeds and 2,3,6 and 7 seeds

highest seed has home field advantage so 1,2,3 and 4 then highest remaining seed in each round after the first round has home field advantage

Will never happen but would be exciting

Texas has been impressive esp. considering they haven't had deGrom all season.

That was a risky sign that they shouldn't have taken on IMO.

If they can add more pitching for 24' they could be the team to beat in the AL for the next 3-4 years anyway.

Or just a healthy deGrom?

Assuming health their starting 5 could be deGrom, Gray, Scherzer, Eovaldi, Heaney (that could be very good given their offense). Only losing via FA Odorizzi and Montgomery.  Starting offense basically staying in tact (less Grossman who is easily replaced). Plus they are dropping a lot of salary giving them a lot of room under luxury tax for adding pitching if needed (likely a strong look to bolster the pen),

Such a shame....I've woken up to see the Duds have lost yet again.....crying fake tears......

Go D'backs!
