Padres Set TinCaps 2021 Opening Day Roster

Fort Wayne’s roster also features three players ranked among MLB.com’s Top 30 San Diego prospects. That’s 23-year-old right-handed pitcher Anderson Espinoza (No. 12), 21-year-old outfielder Tirso Ornelas (No. 19) and 22-year-old left-handed pitcher Mason Feole (No. 28).

Aside from the three top 30 prospects ... there are a couple of players I will be interested in seeing perform:

  1. Ethan Elliot ... LHP who just turned 24 but only drafted in 2019 out of a small college ... 10th round at that which usually is just a low cost pick used to fund over slot picks. Did well in a small short season sample size in 2019 BUT the curiosity stems from him being part of the Padres' alternate squad this spring over a bunch of other more noted options.
  2. Ethan Skender ... 3B (also 24) who was drafted way back in 2016 but has had his minor league career ripped by injuries. Was projected as a good hitter ... and in 2019 (low A) began to show that skill. Hopefully he stays healthy and those hitting skills show themselves.

I guess it there is one surprise ... C Adam Kerner is the guy. A 22 year old non-drafted FA in 2020 out of the USD ... yet to play a minor league game.

Dominating 8-0 win on Opening Day 🙂

Elliot with 4 great IPs!

Tirso 0-for-4 with a walk ...

The trio of youngsters I saw play for Tri-City in 2017 are together again now at Ft Wayne (Almanzar, Lopez, Melean) ... they all had high hopes back in 2017 ... they are much longer longshots now ...

As with Knehr at SA ... Elliott worked in his start ....74 pitches (50 strikes) ... 4 innings ... 1 hit / 2 walks / 9 strikeouts ... 0 runs.

Temper the quality somewhat since all the relief pitchers also dominated a bad outing by the opposition.

Elliott has been on my “watch list” as an under the radar prospects every since he was added to the alternate site over a lot of other options by with minimal history.

re: Elliot ... a long shot, at best ...

Ethan Elliott shut down the West Michigan offense, striking out nine in four innings of work. The 24-year-old left-hander struck out Tigers’ top prospect Spencer Torkelson in his first professional at-bat. Elliott also threw an immaculate inning in the fourth, striking out the Whitecaps in order with ease. He effectively used his fastball to all parts of the zone and overpowered hitters, despite a heater that topped out at 91 and routinely sat in the high-80’s. His low 80’s changeup was very effective as well and his slow curveball had some good bite to it. At 24, he’s probably not going to make significant gains in velocity but his ability to consistently pound the zone gives him a chance. He was with the Padres’ alternate site group prior to being assigned to Fort Wayne.

Probably not a ML starter but Elliot may be the type of pitcher that will succeed as a LHP with command and multiple pitches for, at a minimum, a ML relief pitcher.

I still am impressed by the Padres selecting him for the alternate site in the spring ... given his minimal experience and over a lot more high profile options ... even with his sub-optimal FB velocity.

Worth watching

Espinosa starts ... goes 2 innings / 26 pitches ... 1 H / 3 K ... no runs.

Just as mapped out for his return.

Another VERY nice start for Elliot tonight ...

And again!

From today's (5/17/21) DFR ...

stellar start by Ethan Elliott, who became the first starter in the system to go six innings as he faced the minimum and struck out 13 hitters. The lefty, who works around 90 with his fastball, creates difficult looks and can pitch to all four quadrants effectively. With the advantage of three starts under his belt, the 24-year-old from Tennessee now leads all of minor league baseball with 28 strikeouts and has a sparkling 0.60 ERA through 15 innings. After giving up a leadoff single in the third, Elliott picked off the only runner he allowed all day.

From today's DFR ... another positive Ethan Elliott outing ...

LHP Ethan Elliott pitched five shutout innings, as the lanky left-hander continues to carve up hitters in the High-A Central League. Elliott allowed just two hits and two walks while striking out six. The 24-year-old has been the most dominant pitcher in the league through the season’s first month. He leads the circuit in strikeouts and opposing batters are hitting just .131 off of him – the lowest in the league. Elliott doesn’t have impressive velocity but he throws strikes and has two very good off-speed offerings.
