Do we have a hidden gem in Ivan Castillo?

Is he the best 25-year-old yet to get a PA in MLB?

Or is he a classic AAAA guy?

I'm jumping on the Ivan Castillo bandwagon ... what's not to love?

He's 2-for-3 so far tonight ... raising his BA to .471 🙂

I'm in the fan club.  I had him as our #30 prospect but including the traded out guys, so that would be like low 20's now.  Baseball America had him #34 with even a few more "gone" guys above him, so like "#24" now...

He had a good year in 2018 leading Pads to sign him as Minors FA in 2019 when he ended up winning batting title in AA.  The 2019 AAA International (East Coast) & PCL (West Coast) batting title winners were:  Jake Cronenworth & Ty France.  So I believe guys who can just flat out hit & prove it shouldn't get overlooked.

I think people are writing him off as Minors FA, but he's really more just a late blooming Intl prospect.  Not that old, switch hitter, some versatility.  But his 55-60 Hit tool is the only one above average.  Doesn't walk much at all, and just not the elite athlete guys like Profar & Mateo are.  Can play around INF, but seems like average defensive 2B.  Let's see if he can sustain the hot start!

Aha... AAA is on the same 6-game series then an off (travel) day as the other Minors Leagues.  The only difference is that the off day is Wednesday instead of Monday.

So I think Gore starting Game 2 of the 1st series was by design.  Camarena starts today (game 6) on normal rest since he was Game 1 starter.  NEXT series Gore will start Game 1, but after getting an extra day of rest.  Then he should be lined up for Game 6 on normal rest (5-man rotation).

Assuming they stay on a 5-man rotation, it would then be another month until Gore DIDN'T have an extra day of rest between starts; late June.

El Paso page now does have Roster & Transactions by League, but can't figure out how to display only team stats (it's by league)

From today's DFR ...

Ivan Castillo continued to tear it up in July, with a two-hit night raising his monthly slash line to .395/.415/.447. The 26-year-old from Santiago, Dominican Republic, had hit well enough to earn his first promotion to the Padres during their COVID outbreak, but he struggled upon his return to El Paso, batting .205 in 78 at-bats for the month of June with the Chihuahuas.

Good outing by RHP Pedro Avila tonight. 5 IP 3 H 0 R 0 ER BB 5 K.

I would prefer Avila in San Diego over Arrieta,Velasquez etc....

Agreed Mr. P!

I'd certainly think Pedro has to be given a chance next year?

Hell, anyone with a chance to start HAS to be given a look, if not for SD certainly for El Paso. If this year has taught us anything, the need for 10 starters at or near MLB has to be top of the list.

I'd be stretching out guys like Avila, Diaz, Crismatt, and  Morejon and Baez when they get back.

Add them to Knehr, Gore, Martinez.....that's an extra 8 possible starting arms ready when one of Darvish, Snell, Musgrove, Paddack, Clevenger, Lamet go down.

Bring in another 2 long arms.......should have us covered.
