2021 draft

Page 1 of 3Next

Since the season is over and roster updates/management/changes are still a ways off I am looking at the next draft already. As unhappy as I am that draft order will be based on team's 2020 records only and we will be picking 27th there is still a ton of talent to be had.

I have seen 2 mock drafts having us getting Jackson Jobe(Prospects Live) or James Wood(Mason McRae). I would kill to get either one. Now I know it is far too early for any mock draft to be close to realistic but it is exciting to think that it is even possible for players of their caliber to be available with the 27th pick.

Do any of you have your eyes on any players yet?

So I saw a Mock today that has us taking Frank Mozzicato with our first pick.

If you haven't heard of this kid he's the High School lefty that threw four consecutive No Hitters.

Impressive no matter the competition level.

18 years old already 6'3" low 90's with a 60 grade curve and decent secondary pitches.

AJ Preller has actually been to see him pitch in person as this linked story points out.

I'm not sure if he keeps pitching well he will make it to us but I'm holding out hope anyway!

I saw one with the Padres taking Chase Petty … HS RHP with a high 90s FB out of NJ … so a 70 FB / 55 slider … odds he does not make it to the Padres pick as a fast riser out of the HS ranks.

Petty (NJ) and Mozzicato (CONN) … I guess Preller could be doing a NE scouting trip and see them both.

Yay! We actually DID get Wood! And in the second round!

From today's DFR ...

Lucas Dunn – one of the reinforcements promoted to Lake Elsinore – made quite an impression in his Low-A debut. Dunn had three hits, including a bases-loaded triple that helped Lake Elsinore open up the early lead. Dunn, 22, was drafted in the eighth round in July out of Louisville. In eight games with the ACL Padres, Dunn hit .364/.533/.500 while playing all four corner spots. He started all 50 games for Louisville in his final season of NCAA baseball.

And then from the ACL Padres ...

Designated hitter Marcus Castanon broke out in the loss, doubling and connecting for his first professional homer. The Padres drafted Castanon, 22, out of UC Santa Barbara in the 12th round in July. The infielder was 1-for-18 with 10 strikeouts coming into Friday’s game. Castanon hit .404/.492/.716 with eight homers for the Gauchos in 2021. … Shortstop Jackson Merrill had a pair of singles to extend his hitting streak to nine games. Merrill has two multi-hit games during the stretch and is hitting .355/.412/.484 to start his pro career. … RHP Kevin Kopps pitched 1.2 innings and allowed an earned run while striking out three. Kopps won the Golden Spikes Award this season and could develop into a valuable multi-inning weapon out of the bullpen by as early as next season for the Padres. … Adam Smith, the Padres’ 14th-rounder out of UNC-Wilmington, and seventh-rounder Ryan Och were each activated prior to the game. Smith worked a perfect inning to open the game, while Och struck out the side around a single to begin his professional career.

Kopps has to be moved up to Elsinore, doesn't he? He's a fast track guy- can't lose too time in ACL.

Think they don’t want to over work him this summer …. He apparently pitched a lot already this year in college and since some think he can go directly to AA next season based on his stuff as a RP … not worth pushing in in low A for one more month.

From today's DFR ...

James Wood helped provide all the support that Gore would need, driving in a pair of runs while adding his seventh stolen base. With questions swirling around how much contact Wood would make in his inaugural season, the former IMG Academy standout has posted an OBP of .424 and shown intriguing speed on the bases. The 6-foot-7 outfielder, recently named the number five prospect in the system by MLB Pipeline, may have the highest ceiling of any player in the organization if he can somehow get all the tools to play together.

fourth-rounder Jackson Wolf on the mound. Wolf, 22, allowed two runs over two frames in his first full-season appearance. The lanky lefty worked around 89-90, showing an effective breaking ball.

Can you imagine Mears and Wood in the same lineup if they both become Franimal type players but with more speed?

Yikes!

Judge and Stanton (when they are healthy)
