San Diego Padres Daily Farm Report: August 5

Prospect Watch: El Paso dropped their eighth straight game Wednesday and now have the worst record in the PCL. In his first two starts with El Paso, Jagger Haynes allowed 10 earned runs and walked eight over five innings. This time, he at least lasted four innings, allowing four runs while walking just one. Haynes, leaned on his fastball and slider for 68 of his 80 pitches, but his slider was only in the zone a third of the time. That made it easy for hitters to sit on his 93 mph fastball. Haynes can be extremely effective when he throws strikes, and his walk rate has improved from 14% last year to a manageable 10.2% rate for San Antonio this year. That improvement allowed him to pitch deeper into games with the Missions, and by reaching four innings tonight, Haynes surpassed the 100-inning mark for the third consecutive season. …  David Morgan continued his rehab assignment with El Paso. The good news is that his sinker averaged 97.0 mph after sitting at 96 mph in his appearance Sunday, and his four-seam fastball was back to averaging over 98 mph. Unlike Sunday, however, Morgan was tagged for two runs in one inning. He struggled with his command. The velocity and movement were there, but the results were not, as he generated just one whiff and landed only two of his seven sinkers for strikes. Morgan should make at least one more rehab appearance later this week before the Padres decide whether to activate him from the IL and keep him on the roster or option him. … Tuesday night, Carlos Rodriguez saw his 11-game on-base streak come to an end, so naturally he responded by finishing a home run shy of the cycle while going 4-for-5. During this stretch, Rodriguez is 17-for-45 (.378) with a double, two triples, one home run, six walks, three stolen bases, and 12 runs scored. The 25-year-old is hitting .309 after signing a minor league free agent deal with the Padres last winter.

Roster Moves: Righty Andrew Thurman was promoted from San Antonio to bolster the El Paso pitching staff. With Rodolfo Durán joining the club from the big league team, backstop Anthony Vilar went down to San Antonio. Outfielder Dustin Harris, who contributed over 16 games after signing in July, and righty Michael Flynn were released.

Missions 5, Springfield Cardinals 3

Prospect Watch: The Missions picked up a much-needed win thanks to strong starting pitching and four hits from the heart of the order. Ian Koenig recorded his second quality start since June 20, allowing two runs over six innings. Koenig entered the night coming off his worst month of the season, surrendering 19 earned runs over 27 innings (6.33 ERA), including 10 earned runs over 11 innings in his previous two starts. By completing six innings, Koenig eclipsed the 100-inning mark for the second consecutive season. The former undrafted free agent is now 4-9 with a 4.78 ERA in 21 starts for the Missions. … Another undrafted free agent, Braedon Karpathios, continued his scorching start to August. Karpathios collected two hits, including a double, and is now 9-for-17 with three doubles and a home run through four games this month. He already has as many doubles in August as he recorded over the previous six weeks. The 23-year-old owns a 1.461 OPS to start the month. … While not an undrafted free agent, Jake Cunningham signed with the Padres on a minor league deal this offseason. Cunningham had another multi-hit game, including a double, and scored two runs and drove in two more. He now has more extra-base hits in 91 games with the Padres organization (38) than he recorded during his entire 2½-year career with the Orioles (35). Cunningham is hitting .295 with the Missions and, between Fort Wayne and San Antonio, leads the system with 19 home runs while posting an .889 OPS.

Roster Moves: Corner bat Jack Costello and backup catcher Oswaldo Linares were promoted from Fort Wayne. Kai Murphy moved onto the Development List, while catchers Chris Sargent,  Colton Vincent and righty Andrew Dalquist were released. Vincent had been in the system since signing as an undrafted free agent out of Florida State in 2023.

West Michigan Whitecaps 11, TinCaps 1

Key Stats: RHP Winyer Chourio 2.2 IP, 5 H, 6 ER, 4 BB, 2 K; LF Ryan Wideman 3-for-4, LF Kasen Wells 1-for-3, R; DH Carlos Rodriguez 1-for-3

Prospect Watch: The TinCaps could muster only one run on five singles. Ryan Wideman collected three of the team’s five hits, marking his fourth three-hit game in his last 10 appearances. The former third-round pick still leads the minors with 60 stolen bases and is hitting .307 with an .808 OPS between Lake Elsinore and Fort Wayne this season, but hasn’t had an extra-base hit in 17 games. …. The TinCaps used five pitchers to get through the game as Winyer Chourio couldn’t get through three innings. The only one who did not allow a run was Sean Barnett, making his 2026 debut with Fort Wayne. Barnett spent much of last year with the TinCaps as a two-way player, hitting .191 with a .597 OPS while also posting a 21.09 ERA in 10.2 innings. This year, Barnett has focused exclusively on pitching, averaging more than a strikeout per inning with Lake Elsinore. In his Fort Wayne debut, he walked two and struck out two in a scoreless inning. In 37.1 innings across 33 appearances this season, Barnett has 49 strikeouts but also 42 walks. … After hitting over .300 in July with a .839 OPS, Justin DeCriscio had a rare 0-for-4 game from the leadoff spot. We sat down with Justin and discussed his success this season.

Roster Moves: After having Kash Mayfield and Miguel Mendez traded off their roster, the TinCaps got a bit of a re-stock with position players Bradley Frye, Yoiber Ocopio and Conner Westenburg, and pitchers Isaiah Lowe and Jeferson Villabona joining Barnett in moving up from Lake Elsinore. Right-handed relievers Clark Candiotti and Luis Germán and infielder Zach Evans were all released.

Ontario Tower Buzzers 3, Storm 2

Prospect Watch: The Storm made a flurry of roster moves before tonight’s game, including activating Dawson Willis from the IL. Before landing on the injured list, Willis posted a .903 OPS with the Storm in July. The undrafted free agent is hitting .285/.374/.544 in his first season in the Padres organization despite an alarming 37.9% strikeout rate . … Another 2025 undrafted free agent, Cameron Nohos, recorded his first quality start. The right-hander allowed three runs over six innings while walking two and striking out seven. It was his first outing of more than four innings in 19 appearances as he works back from injuries that cost him his entire final collegiate season. Between the ACL and Lake Elsinore, Nohos has struck out 77 batters in 51.2 innings (13.41 K/9), though he also owns a 6.10 ERA. … After posting an .883 OPS in Peoria, Jesmaylin Arias made his Lake Elsinore debut and carried his success with him, going 2-for-4 in his California League debut. The 19-year-old should continue to receive regular playing time in the outfield corners. … Alex Conover, who the Padres selected with the fourth-round compensation pick the received when Dylan Cease left as a free agent, and sixth-rounder Nu’u Contrades became the first members of this year’s draft class to make their professional debuts. Contrades earned First Team All-Big 12 honors after hitting .366/.434/.762 at Arizona State. Over 53 games, he hit 21 home runs while striking out just 28 times. In his debut, the Hawaii native went 0-for-2 with a walk. Conover, who turns 21 at the end of this month, had a breakout campaign in his junior season at Oklahoma State, putting up a .357/.476/.625 line. The left-handed hitting outfielder went 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts in his debut.

Roster Moves: Right-hander Michael Salina, the Padres’ fourth-round pick in 2025 whose return from pre-draft Tommy John surgery was slowed this summer by shoulder soreness, finally got out to Elsinore. He should pitch Thursday. Ryan Reed, also a 2025 draftee coming off injury, and lefty Joseph Herrera, who spent the first three months of the year in the Storm bullpen, also came up from the complex in Peoria. Catchers Jake Bold and 10th-rounder Augie Lopez also made it to full-season ball for the first time. Outfielder George Bilecki and relievers Vicarte Domingo, Cal Riehl, and Carson Swilling were released.

Fabian Alcantara, Santiago Contreras, Eduarlin Tejeda and Tyler Dietz all were released from the ACL roster. After all of the moves, the organization has to make room for three more draftees and for Luis Gutierrez to come off the 60-day IL in the next week.
