Prospect Watch: Jackson Wolf made his fourth start of the year for El Paso and turned in his best effort of the young season. Pitching in the cold at sea level in Tacoma helped Wolf keep the ball in the yard; he had allowed three homers in his last two starts. The lefty completed 4.2 innings, allowing one run on five hits as he walked three, hit a batter, and tallied four strikeouts. Since rejoining the Padres, Wolf has walked 12 and hit three batters in 14.2 innings. Walks were not an issue for Wolf in 2023 as he posted a 2.3 BB/9 in 124 innings between Double-A San Antonio and Double-A Altoona.  Wolf has never been a hard thrower but topped out at 91 mph, averaging 89 mph on his fastball in the contest. … After giving up nine earned runs over 3.1 innings in three outings last week, flame-throwing righty Sean Reynolds has now delivered two straight scoreless outings. He’s walked eight batters in 9.1 innings on the year which actually represents an improvement on his showing with after coming over to El Paso last year, when he walked 27 batters in 16 innings. Reynolds threw his fastball 81% of the time Wednesday, topping out at 98. … Donovan Solano played his first full game on the field, getting the start at second.  He had previously started at first but was pulled after five innings.  The 36-year-old is hitting .250/.412/.250 in 12 at-bats. … Brett Sullivan added two more doubles as he continues to lead the Chihuahuas offense. The versatile catcher is batting a crisp .382/.443/.600 in 13 games.

Padres prospect Reggoe Lawson delivers for the San Antonio Missions

Prospect Watch: Jakob Marsee continued to slowly defrost from the icy first few weeks. The lefthanded center fielder had consecutive multi-hit games for the first time in 2024.  He also collected his first extra-base hit in over a week.  His .182/.313/.303 line is far from where both he and the organization expect it to be, but is considerably better than the .128/.276/.277 he was hitting last week. … Nathan Martorella reached base two more times with a single and a walk. Although he has gotten off to a slow start power-wise, he has contributed by hitting .313 with a .410 on-base percentage. With a week left in April, the first baseman has also already tied his career-best for stolen bases in a month with two. The entire Missions squad has been aggressive on the bases, converting 31 of 38 stolen base attempts in 17 games. … For the first time since June 12, 2022 Reggie Lawson did not give up a run (he allowed an unearned run in his second appearance). That start also set Lawson’s career high with nine strikeouts over 4.2 innings. It’s a long climb for Lawson, but it’s great to see small steps as he tries to get back into the game.

Roster Moves: Marcos Castañon hit the seven-day injured list with an undisclosed injury. Chase Valentine was promoted from Lake Elsinore to take his place on the active roster.

Great Lakes Loons 11, TinCaps 1 (Game 1: Seven innings)

Key Stats: LHP Jagger Haynes (L, 0-2) 2.2 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 5 K; RHP Tyler Morgan 2 IP, BB, 2 K; DH Ethan Salas 1-for-3; RF Tyler Robertson 1-for-3, 2B, RBI; CF Homer Bush Jr 0-for-2, BB, R, SB (7)

Great Lakes Loons 5, TinCaps 1 (Game 2: Seven innings)

Key Stats: RHP Enmanuel Pinales (L, 0-3), 4 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 K; RHP Bradgley Rodriguez 0.2 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K; C Ethan Salas 0-for-3; 3B Devin Ortiz 1-for-2, BB; 2B Jarryd Dale 1-for-3, R; SS Nik McClaughry 1-for-2, 2B, RBI

Prospect Watch: Between two seven-inning games, the TinCaps collected a total of six hits.  In game one, Jagger Haynes looked sharp early, striking out four of the first six batters, and allowing a two-out runner in both innings. In the third, the wheels came off. Haynes had been throwing his mid-90s fastball up in the zone to great effect, but in the third, it started leaking down. When it did it was hit hard. Three of the first five hitters in the third had booming extra-base hits and it was quickly 4-0. … In game two, newly-promoted RHP Bradgley Rodriguez had a rough welcome to the Midwest League. The first four batters reached base before he settled down and struck out the next two.  At 20 years old, Rodriguez has the makeup and raw stuff to emerge as a dominant late-inning reliever, but it remains to be seen if he can consistently put it all together. He had struck out nine while allowing just three runners and one run in 5.1 innings in Lake Elsinore. … Infielder Devin Ortiz reached base three times in six trips to the plate across the double-header, pushing his on-base percentage for the year to .426. The undrafted free agent out of the University of Virginia has been one of the early standouts for Fort Wayne, posting a .937 OPS through 15 games.

Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 10, Storm 8

Key Stats: CF Dillon Head 2-for-5, 2B, R, RBI; SS Leo De Vries 2-for-4, R, 2B, BB, SB (1); 3B Jay Beshears 1-for-3, 2 R, RBI, 2 BB; DH JD Gonzalez 0-for-2, R, RBI, 2 BB

Prospect Watch: After going hitless in his professional debut, shortstop Leodalis De Vries wasted no time Wednesday, smacking a line drive to right in the first inning. Two batters later he stole second but ended up stranded. In the third, he doubled to the gap but was thrown out trying to leg it into a triple. He would ground out and strike out before walking and scoring in his final trip to the plate. … Making his professional debut, catcher JD Gonzalez drew two walks and got hit by a pitch in five plate appearances. The Padres’ second pick in last year’s draft, the 18-year-old from Puerto Rico adds another imposing bat to a deep Storm lineup. … Dillon Head – the only player the Padres selected before Gonzalez last year – has busted out of his early season slump to show why he was a top draft pick.  Head now has four straight multi-hit games, and six in his last seven.  Last week Head was hitting .184/.244/.263, it’s now gone up to a more reputable .279/.355/.426.  It has only been two games, but the combination of Head and De Vries at the top of the order might prove to be one of the youngest, most dynamic duos in all of baseball.
