Prospect Watch: El Paso pitching got hit hard for the second straight day, and the Chihuahuas didn’t score in double digits, which hasn’t been a recipe for success in the Pacific Coast League. … Eguy Rosario has been heating up. His three-hit night extended his hitting streak to six games and pushed his line for June to .324/.387/.721 with 14 extra-base hits in 16 games. He’s mainly played second base but has also seen significant time at shortstop and third base. With MLB capping MLB pitching staffs at 13 after today, Rosario is timing his hot streak well. … Another potential call-up for a utility infielder/outfielder is Matthew Batten, who didn’t miss a beat after his time on the COVID list. He has a slash line of .326/.380/.457 for the month and can play any infield or outfield position. One significant advantage Rosario has over Batten is that Rosario is already on the 40-man roster. … Brent Rooker, who had a pair of doubles Saturday, and has been up to the big leagues already, is also having a good month at .308/.440/.615. … Esteury Ruiz was given his first day off with El Paso since being promoted to Triple-A on June 7.

Prospect Watch: Wearing the jerseys of the Negro Leagues Black Bronchos, the Missions exploded for their biggest offensive output of the month to back one of Reggie Lawson‘s better pitching performances of the season. Up 5-1 in the seventh, Chandler Seagle put the game out of reach with grand slam. On our recent trip to San Antonio, we chatted with the catcher from Appalachian State about his significant offensive improvement this season. It’s hard to find a better defensive catcher than Seagle, so even holding his own offensively makes him someone to watch. … Domingo Leyba, 26, who has three years of major league experience, is having his best month in San Antonio, hitting .333/.406/.614 with eight extra-base hits in 14 games. He has split time between second and shortstop. … Lawson has found his footing after a rough May. Over three June starts, he’s posted a 1.23 ERA in 14.2 innings while allowing just six hits. His command is not all the way back – he owns a 14:7 strikeout-to-walk ratio this month – but is definitely going forward after Tommy John and shoulder issues.

Prospect Watch:  Down 4-0 on the road in the top of the ninth, the TinCaps scored five runs to take the lead, punctuated by Robert Hassell III‘s two-out, three-run flare double down the left field line. Unfortunately, the Lugnuts came right back to walk off with the victory. … Since coming back from the COVID-19 list on June 12 and a tough May (.220/.290/.286), Hassell has been on fire with a .360/.429/.880 slash line. One noticeable difference this month has been Hassell attacking pitches early in the count, which has helped him collect eight extra-base hits in six games. Hassell also swiped his 17th base of the year to move to seventh in the Midwest League, one behind his teammate Corey Rosier. Hassell leads the Midwest League with a .313 batting average and is eighth in OPS at .886.

Prospect Watch: The Storm won their third of five games with the Nuts with an offensive explosion. On the mound, Victor Lizarraga and Hazahel Quijada combined to hold the home team to a pair of runs. … Lizarraga, 18, turned in his third straight five-inning, two-run start. On the season, he has a 3-1 record with a 3.70 ERA with 47 punchouts against 20 walks in 48.2 innings as the second-youngest pitcher on the circuit. … Quijada, a 17th-round pick in 2018 out of UC Riverside, tossed a career-high four shutout innings. The lefty has 36 strikeouts against 20 walks in 29.1 innings in his second tour of the Californian League. … James Wood filled up the box score in his third game since returning from a wrist injury that sidelined him in early May. Wood got on base three times while patrolling center field. Through 81 plate appearances, Wood has walked (17) more than he has struck out (13) in the California League. While hitting .372/.465/.535 in the ACL last year, his 31% strikeout rate was one of the very few things that anyone could find fault with. … Justin Farmer stole three more bases and now ranks sixth in the California League with 19 in 22 attempts. He and the rest of the circuit are chasing teammate Max Ferguson, who stole another base to give him 43 on the year.

Prospect Watch: At 17, Ensenada, Mexico native Rosman Verdugo continues to impress. He added a pair of RBIs with a double Saturday and has a .357/.387/.607 slash line in his first ten games. … Joshua Mears struck out three more times and has 12 in his last nine games. As always, when he makes contact, the ball will fly; he also has five extra-base hits, including a pair of home runs and a triple in that stretch. … Javier Chacon, 19, had another strong outing. The Cuban native leads the team in strikeouts with 18 in 10.1 innings against three walks. He might be one of the first pitchers to escape the desert to Lake Elsinore. … Samuel Zavala, who got consistent raves for his performance through extended spring training, went 0-for-2 in his season debut. The 17-year-old outfielder from Venezuela, showed an advanced feel at the plate in a strong DSL campaign last year.
