With their fifth pick in the 2020 MLB draft, the San Diego Padres selected RHP Levi Thomas out of Troy…

When was the first time you knew the Padres were interested in you?

Levi Thomas:  I had talked to our area scout, Stephen Baker, throughout the season, and he told me about some teams who were interested, including the Padres. But I never expected San Diego to be the team that selected me. I was hoping I would be selected, but I also knew there was a very real possibility that I would not.

I did get to have a few really good Zoom calls with the [Padres]. They took me through their organizational philosophy, and I learned a lot about how it runs and player development, but even then I wasn’t expecting it. To think that the Padres only had six picks in the entire draft and selected me as one of them, it's surreal.
