Today’s edition of the Daily includes reports on rehabbing Padres, a complete game shutout, some hot-hitting shortstops, and a big Luis Patiño sighting.

Chihuahuas 3, Tacoma Rainers 1

Key Stats: 2B Luis Urías 1-3, BB; C Francisco Mejia 1-4, RBI; 3B Ty France 0-4, K; DH Raffy Lopez 2-4, 2B, RBI, 2 K; 1B Brett Nicholas 2-4, RBI; SS Javy Guerra 1-4, R, 2 K; SP Eric Lauer 3.1 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 3 BB, 3 K; RP Colin Rea 2.0 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 2 BB, 1 K; RP Carter Capps (S, 1) 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 0 K

Prospect Watch: Rehabbing starter Eric Lauer received mixed reviews in his first Triple-A start since April, as he kept Tacoma off the board, but also allowed three walks. The 23-year-old threw 61 pitches before exiting with an out in the fourth. … Of the nine Chihuahua hits, only Raffy Lopez‘s leadoff double went for extra bases. He’d come around and score on a Shane Peterson single. … Luis Urias smashed a low liner up the middle in the first that was gloved on a hop by the second baseman diving to his right, but was unable to make a decent attempt at a throw to get Urías at first. He now has a 13-game hitting streak, and his 1.168 OPS for the month of August brings his season slash line to an impressive .296/.398/.447. … Don’t look now but Urías’ double-play partner Javy Guerra has a .910 OPS in the 38 games since the All-Star break. However, his uptick in performance is due in part to a large increase in BABIP, up to .458 BABIP since the break, after being .291 in the first half. … The Chihuahuas have now won ten in a row and have their magic number for the division championship down to one.

Missions 1, Frisco RoughRiders 0

Key Stats: 1B Kyle Overstreet 3-3; C Austin Allen 0-3, K; CF Buddy Reed 0-4, 3 K; 3B Hudson Potts 1-3, K; 2B Peter Van Gansen 2-3, 2B, K, R; SP Emmanuel Ramirez (W, 2-1) 6.0 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 6 K; RP Andres Muñoz (S, 7) 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 K

Prospect Watch: The struggling Missions offense got some much-needed help from the pitching staff, as Emmanuel RamirezTrevor Megill, Elliot Ashbeck, and Andres Muñoz combined on a four-hit shutout. After posting a 5.43 ERA in the Cal League for 23 games (71.1 innings), Ramirez has a 1.59 ERA in his first three starts (17 innings) for San Antonio. The 24-year-old Dominican needed just 84 pitches to get through the sixth, and the only real trouble he ever got in was after a pair of singles to lead off the fourth, but he was able to escape the jam with a strikeout and a double play. … The Missions’ lone run came in the fifth after a Hudson Potts single, a Peter Van Gansen double, and a Michael Gettys RBI-single. … Buddy Reed has struck out more than once in half of the 34 games he’s played in for San Antonio. He has struck out at a 33.6% rate against Texas League pitching and has a .213 OBP since his promotion to Double-A. … Muñoz picked up his seventh save since joining the Missions and has a .158 batting average against, coupled with a 1.12 WHIP. The fireballer out of Mexico has struck out 19 in 17 innings but has also walked 10 batters in that time span.

Lancaster JetHawks 9, Storm 8

Key Stats: RF Nate Easley 3-5, 2 2B, 2 RBI, R, K; CF Edward Olivares 2-4, 2B, R, RBI, K; C A.J. Kennedy 2-4, HR (1), 2 R, 3 RBI, K; DH Luis Torrens 2-5, R, 2 K; 2B Eguy Rosario 0-5, 5 K; SP Aaron Leasher 5.1 IP, 3 ER, 7 H, 3 BB, 5 K; RP Dauris Valdez 0.0 IP, 3 ER, 2 H, 1 BB, 0 K

Prospect Watch: One of, if not the most entertaining relievers in the Lake Elsinore bullpen of late has been closer Dauris Valdez. Coming into last night, he had not allowed a run in eight straight appearances (10.1 innings), and the 6-foot-8 Dominican had put together a 17:2 K: BB ratio during that stretch, using his dominating fastball which reaches 100 MPH. However, after being staked to an 8-5 lead, he allowed a leadoff walk, followed by a pair of singles, and was promptly yanked from the game. Caleb Boushley was brought in, and allowed a walk-off grand slam. … The Storm offense combined for a 14-hit barrage, with all but Eguy Rosario (who struck out in all five plate appearances) recording at least one hit. … Nate Easley is 14-for-38 (.368) in his last ten games, though he has just a .755 OPS on the season. … A.J. Kennedy, who is viewed as one of the best defensive backstops in the organization but has difficulty with the bat, hit his second dinger of the season, with the first coming in El Paso. … In his fourth start since joining Lake Elsinore, Aaron Leasher improved his K:BB ratio to 25:9 in 23.1 innings.

South Bend Cubs 3, TinCaps 2

Key Stats: DH Gabriel Arias 2-4, 2B, RBI, K; 1B Jalen Washington 1-3, HR (8), K; SS Owen Miller 1-4, 2B, R; 2B Esteury Ruiz 0-3, K; LF Olivier Basabe 0-4; SP Luis Patiño 6.0 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 1 BB, 7 K

Prospect Watch: As it has been with most of his starts, the game early on was all about Luis Patiño. The 18-year-old Colombian lowered his ERA to 2.16 on the season by allowing just one run on a leadoff double and a pair of sacrifices. He would need just 76 pitches (46 for strikes) to make it through six innings, and his fastball was clocked as high as 100 MPH on the radar gun. His seven strikeouts on the day pushed his season total up to 98 in 83.1 innings. … After posting a .588 OPS in the month of July, shortstop Gabriel Arias has a .982 mark in August. With his sixth multi-hit game of the month, he’s raised his season batting average up to .238, 15 points higher than it was at the end of July. Despite the big numbers, he is also striking out at a 32.6% clip during the same stretch. … Owen Miller has continued with his hot start to the Midwest League, with a .364/.377/.576 hitting line in 16 games for the TinCaps since his promotion from Tri-City. … After putting up big numbers for the Dust Devils in Low-A, Olivier Basabe has struggled for Fort Wayne. Though his BABIP is a little on the low side since he joined the squad in Indiana, and he is only striking out 13.5% of the time, he has struggled to get on base, to the tune of a .245 OBP.

Dust Devils 5, Eugene Emeralds 4 (11 innings)

Key Stats: C Blake Hunt 4-5, 2 2B, 2 R; DH Tyler Benson 2-3, 2B, 2 BB, 3 RBI; SS Tucupita Marcano 0-5, 2 K; LF Michael Curry 1-5, 2 R, 2 K; SP Ramon Perez 5.0 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 4 H, 2 BB, 4 K; Jose Galindo (S, 1) 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K

Prospect Watch: Catcher Blake Hunt had his first four-hit game of the season, and the second of his career, dating back to August of 2017. Though the Dust Devils didn’t score until the seventh and ninth innings, he set the table in both, coming in on RBI by Tyler Benson and Kelvin Alarcon, respectively. … Tri-City rallied in the ninth, scoring a pair of runs to break a 2-2 tie. Reliever Nick Kuzia, however, allowed a one-out, 2-run homer to push the game to extras. … In the eleventh inning, Hunt would push the placed runner, to third with a single, and Benson came through with two outs for a single and his third RBI of the night. … Jose Galindo closed out the game with a 1-2-3 inning, lowering his ERA to 1.71. He hasn’t allowed an earned run dating back to July 12 (12.2 innings), and has a 15:4 K: BB ratio during that stretch. … Starter Ramon Perez hasn’t allowed more than three earned runs in any of his ten outings for the Dust Devils this season. The 19-year-old Cuban has held hitters to a .236 batting average and allowed just one home run. … The Ems attempted to steal four bases on the night, with Hunt gunning down one of them. He is 23-for-78 (29.5%) in caught stealing percentage for Tri-City this season.

AZL Rangers 8, AZL Padres-1 3

Key Stats: 3B Luis Almanzar 1-2, 2 BB, R; DH Nick Gatewood 1-4, RBI, K; RF Agustin Ruiz 2-4, 3B, RBI, K; SP Alexuan Vega 2.2 IP, 3 ER, 4 H, 4 BB, 0 K

AZL Padres-2 10, AZL Royals 9

Key Stats: CF Angel Solarte 3-4, 2B, R, SB; C Alison Quintero 2-3, 2B, BB, R, 2 RBI; 2B Sean Guilbe 1-5, HR (4), 2 RBI, K; LF Mason House 0-3, 2 BB, 2 K, R; SS Jordy Barley 1-5, RBI, K, CS; RP Felix Minjarez 3.1 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 0 BB, 5 K; RP Dominic Taccolini (BS, 1) 1.2 IP, 4 ER, 5 H, 0 BB, 2 K

Prospect Watch: Infielder Luis Almanzar had his third multi-walk game of the year. With a 9.2% walk rate between Single-A and Rookie ball, the 18-year-old has an OBP (.258) that is 77 points higher than his batting average. … In the month of August, outfielder Agustin Ruiz is hitting .324/.390/.515. The 18-year-old out of Mexico sports a 12.1% walk rate for 2018 but also has a 31.4% strikeout rate. … The Padres’ sixth-round pick in the June draft, Alexuan Vega has a 13:13 K: BB ratio in 15 innings over his first seven professional outings. The rail-thin 6-foot-2 lefty out of Puerto Rico has a 10.80 ERA during that stretch. … After putting together a .509 OPS in the month of July, Alison Quintero has been hot in August, compiling a .350/.409/.450 slash line. The 18-year-old Venezuelan catcher has also thrown out 44.2% of would-be base stealers in the AZL (19-for-43). … Pitcher Felix Minjarez, signed as a post-draft free agent out of the University of Redlands in June, has had a solid start to his professional career, despite the 21-year-old having a slight age difference in the AZL. He owns a 38:11 K: BB rate and a sparkling 1.61 ERA in 28 innings.

  1. Uhm for the storm game. Correct me if I’m wrong but last night was Radke’s fourth appearance in lake Elsinore, and he didn’t give up an earned run. He actually pitched before Valdez last night. I think you’re referring to Caleb Boushley…….
